"Conga, Queen of the Jungle,"blared the headline above the tent door.
It cost a quarter to get in.
They were a husband and wife team,he was dressed up like he was on African safari and she was clad in a skimpy leopard bikini,a blonde woman.
She was comatose inside a cage for our protection,he told us.He had found her in the jungles of the deep Congo, prisoner of a witch doctor.
She was still under the witch doctor's evil curse,nothing could save her.
"Please remain quiet,"he told us."We don't want to bring down the wrath of evil spirits from the deepest Congo."
As the lights went down some creepy music started to play and it was pitch black inside the tent except for the woman in the cage and the safari guy.
He said some other crap that I can't remember and stepped back.
All of a sudden everyone in the jam-packed circus tent started getting nervous as Conga began to change into a gorilla.
"Remain perfectly still",he told us,"we mustn't frighten her.Conga,awake!"
All of a sudden she wakes up and starts to rattle the bars of her cage in anger.
"Conga, get back!"he cried in alarm.
The cage door swings open and she charges out growling and grabbing at people.
The next moment it's chaos;with about thirty people jam packed inside of a tent with a psycho gorilla from the deepest Congo running loose!
I got knocked down in the stampede and stomped on as people ran for the door.
I was scared shitless and as I got to my feet the safari guy saw me.
"Run for your life!"
The last I saw of him,he was whipping her back into her cage.
A half hour later we walked by the same side show and there he was,smoking a cigar,selling tickets like everything was normal.
They're in one of the old James Bond movies , I can't remember which one,their show was that good.
Man,that entire generation is dead now.
