北宋末年因受北方金國欺辱只得南移偏安，進入了南宋時期。南宋當朝依舊重文輕武，而門第階級更是兒女婚配的首要條件。自古以來士農工商，萬般皆下品唯有讀書高，但南宋秉持恩科考試取士卻不受出身門第所限，只要不是重刑罪犯，即使是工商、僧道、農民，甚至是屠户，都可以應試授官。南宋的科舉登第者多數為平民，所以平民男子皆可透過科舉，讓家宅門風得以翻身。但是女子卻沒有此項恩惠，而造成南宋有溺女歪風。這是因為南宋年間，窮苦人家生女，擔憂即便養育成人後，無力負擔豐厚的嫁妝，而女子於出嫁後倍受婆家冷眼相待，故而選擇溺女不養。而南宋由官署成立慈幼局，便是想藉著由官方出錢撫養棄嬰，藉此阻止此項劣習歪風，此為歷史上記載最早的育幼院紀錄。

本文以南宋時期為背景，女主角楊慈芸本為破廟棄嬰，她經歷被善心人家收養，長於商賈世家，知書達禮溫柔嫻靜。然而命運輪轉，她的身世始終為謎。及笄後，面臨婚配嫁娶之年到來，養父母選擇隱瞞身世，楊慈芸是否有機會能找回生身父母？而她的真實身分又是何人？
