I don’t think I’d been that excited for someone else in a long time. Betty looked so badass and shoved her victory down everyone else’s throat. Well, except mine, I guess. I didn’t want to win, though.
And goddamn, when she threw the coat at Augustine and the crown at James, like dang. That dramatic bow on top of it-I taught her well.
The next song came on and I dragged Cam out into the middle of the dance floor. We started dancing and laughing, just having fun, while all the couples around us were grinding on each other. Which I think is absolutely disgusting to be doing in public.
And contrary to popular belief, me and Cam haven’t had sex, and we don’t plan to anytime soon. We’ve been dating for over a year and a half now, and it's just not something we’re interested in.
Me and Cam are more like best friends in a romantic relationship, and that’s what it is: romantic. Not sexual. At all.
“Now I’m all about you, I’m all about you, ah” we sang, from this new song I love called ‘long story short’. Cam actually used the song to ask me to homecoming. His poster said “Long story short…I’m all about you. Hoco?” It was the perfect proposal.
The dance ended at 10. There was glitter on the gym floor from the girls’ dresses. We went out the front door, hands intertwined. Girls were carrying their shoes out in the lobby, and there were a few Polaroids scattered on the floor from where the photo booth was.
I hopped into the passenger seat of Cam’s car, and I plugged my phone into the car to play music. I put on this song called ‘gold rush’ and he and I sang it word for word in unison while he drove over to Betty’s house for our party.
We pulled into her driveway where her’s and Josh’s cars were parked. I left my heels on my seat when Cam opened the passenger door for me, and led me inside Betty’s house.
Betty and Josh were sitting on the floor together watching something on Josh’s phone when we walked in. She got up and gave me a hug. She had changed out of her bodysuit, and was now in black sweatpants and her purple Destin, Florida sweatshirt that he got when she came on vacation with my family over the summer.
Josh had changed, too. He was in gray sweatpants and a navy blue hoodie. Betty led me to her room where we sat on her bed to talk before our other friends arrived.
“So, how was the rest of the dance?” she asked.
I slipped my dress off and put on a yellow tank top and leggings. “It was good, I had a lot of fun. It was a great last homecoming. Casen Murphy did the worm and eventually fell on his face. Some of the junior girls were drunk and acted like it. They kept asking me if they could date Cam. But overall, it was pretty good. Danielle finally kissed Krish, so you’ll get to hear about that all night,” I told her.
She smiled. “Good for her,” she replied. “I mean, she’s liked him for months now, and like he’s always been very public about the fact that he thinks she’s so hot.”
“Yeah, exactly,” I said.
We heard a knock at her door so we went out and Josh was at the front door, with Alana and Max walking in. Alana had already changed out of her red dress into a t-shirt and athletic shorts. Her platinum blonde hair was tied in a messy bun on the top of her head, with some of her curls hanging out.
“Do you have any food?” Alana asked Betty, smiling.
“Of course, we bought snacks yesterday. There’s fruit in the fridge, pretzels with nutella and peanut butter on the counter and there’s water in the fridge, too,” Betty told her.
She gave Alana a hug and Alana went to the fridge and filled a bowl full of assorted fruits. The boys were all sitting on the couch and talking, all very comfortable. Betty pulled me and Alana into her bedroom quickly and shut the door.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. Alana nodded while she popped a grape in her mouth.
“James texted me,” she said.
“Bitch, I thought you blocked him on everything,” Alana said.
"I did!” she exclaimed. “I forgot about his backup Instagram account,” Betty said.
“Okay so, what did he say? What does he want now?” I asked.
Betty sighed. “He wants another chance. Again,” she told us.
“Bitch, no!!” Alana yelled. “He’s a man whore and completely disgusting. Cut him off again. I’ll go cut his dick off for you if you want.”
Betty cracked a small smile. “No, that’s okay,” she mumbled. “But yeah, I’ll block this account, too.”
“Good. Now I wanna sit by my boyfriend, can we go out now?” Alana asked.
“Go ahead,” Betty replied.
We walked out just as Danielle and Krish walked in, hand in hand. I smiled. Danielle had liked Krish for forever, but wanted to date other people first because ‘there’s a lesser chance of ending up with these boys and I want to be the best person I can be for Krish’. Which is actually really sweet but it was such a slow burn and painful to watch, honestly.
Danielle was still in her dress, a tight satin emerald green, which complimented them both greatly. Krish was Indian, so that dark green looked amazing against his warm brown complexion. And Danielle had red hair, like the bright natural red. She had lots of freckles and light green eyes, which paired well with her dress.
All eight of us sat on the floor, snacking and talking. We played Truth or Dare for a little bit, and then Never Have I Ever, but it got dirty real fast. And of course, me and Cam didn’t put any fingers down and Betty could tell I was getting embarrassed, so she changed the game.
Around 11:30, we heard a knock at the door.
“Who else was supposed to be coming?” Alana asked.
"Nobody,” Betty replied.
She got up to go see who was at the door, and I got up with her.
She opened the door a little bit, with the frame creaking as she opened it.
It was James.
“I need to talk to you,” he whispered.
Betty very audibly groaned and the two of us stood on her doorstep under the front porch light.
“Make it quick,” she warned him.
“I need you, Betty, I don't know who I am without you,” he begged.
“Bullshit!” I exclaimed. “You know exactly who you are, everyone does! You’re a cheater and a liar and a fake! A whore! Get out of here or I’m gonna kick your ass,” I yelled at him.
“Hey!” he yelled. “I’m talking to my girlfriend, not you.”
“I am not your girlfriend! Stop calling me that! We’re done! You blew it. I moved on, now get over yourself and do the same. Get off my porch, go home, James,” Betty exclaimed.
I saw tears well up in his drunk eyes. “I still love you. I always will,” he practically begged Betty.
“Well I don’t, so accept that,” she replied. I could hear the coldness in her voice.
He dug around in his jacket pocket. Seconds later, he pulled out two glittering pieces of plastic.
“I brought you your crown. You’ll always be my queen,” he said.
She looked down at the pieces and shook her head. “I don’t want that. Please go home. Leave me alone.”
“Please, Betty,” he begged.
“Go fuck yourself, James,” she said, and we went back into her house.
