而正巧德軍裝甲精銳-第2裝甲師與SS第17裝甲擲彈兵師同時出現在了奧馬哈和卡朗唐地區。如果奧馬哈海灘的美軍被趕下海，或者卡朗唐沒有拿下，那麼霸王行動就有失敗的風險。她必須在兩支精銳德軍的猛攻下守住卡朗唐及奧馬哈海灘，不成功便成仁。
