愛新覺羅．弘曆是清世宗 （雍正帝）的兒子，二十五歲登基，在位六十年，年號「乾隆」也就使用了六十年。接着，他雖退位為太上皇，但仍將大權控制在自己手中，直至數年後去世，所以他實際掌權的時間超過了在位六十一年的祖父清聖祖 （康熙帝）。
