Episode 2 Continued - Murder on Elle Street
The moment I knocked on Yumi's door, I adjusted the teacups to the right fitting on my tray.
When there was no response, I entered, closing the door quietly behind me.
Yumi was on the bed, sound asleep under her puffy covers, and I just smiled and stepped over to nightstand, setting the tray of tea down.
I then walked over to the windows, throwing open the curtains and tying them so they draped around the corners perfectly. "Master, it's time to wake up."
There was no response.
I turned and stepped over to the bed, staring down to find Yumi still asleep, breathing softly like she didn't even hear me.
"Deep sleep, I see," I answered, smiling. "If I wake you now, you'll be grumpy. Depressing, isn't it? I didn't want to have to resort to this. Or did I?"
I sat on the bed as she remained asleep, and I leaned over her form, but there was no reaction.
So I gently brushed her hair away from her eyes, making her moan in annoyance. "Master, it's time to wake up."
She squeezed her eyes shut tighter and turned her head away, but I just tucked her hair behind her ear.
I smiled softly as she remained sound asleep, so I continued touching her hair, running the black strands through my fingers and seeing how far I could go.
The moment I brushed my thumb under her right eye, her lashes parted.
"What are you doing?" she said.
I smiled innocently. "Waking you up, my lord."
"With your hand on my face?" she said then, tone curt.
"Yes," I answered, "is it not to your liking, master?"
"It's creepy," she answered, glaring. "Stop it."
"You hate it, which means it's a suitable way to wake you, isn't it?" I chuckled, pulling my hand away. "Plus, I wanted to see your eye."
"Stop it or I'll have your head on a platter," she answered, still glaring at me.
"My, my," I said then, laughing softly, "you just woke and are already threatening me?"
"You've heard worse from me," she answered, sitting up.
I watched as she let out a soft yawn and rubbed her eyes, setting her hands on the bed seconds later. "What time is it?"
"Almost four, my lord. You slept about five hours."
She scoffed. "Oh, is that all?"
I stood, brushing off my pants before I went to her nightstand to pour her morning tea. "It's better than no hours, master."
"I was being sarcastic, Sebastian." She sent me a look, and I just smiled and stepped over to her, handing her a teacup.
"Is it chai? Made from Black Tea and milk?" she asked me.
I bowed before her. "Your nose is keen, my lord."
"With sugar?" she asked me.
"Three scoops," I answered, standing now. "Just as you like it."
She sipped it then, rubbing one of her eyes. "Good."
I remained standing at her bedside as she quietly drank her tea.
"Do you have news for me?" she suggested then.
I smiled. "Yes, master."
"What did you find?"
"A lot, master, maybe a little more than you asked me."
"Efficient as always, aren't you, Sebastian?" She sent me a small smile.
"Always," I agreed.
"Do tell me," she suggested. "I'm not one who likes waiting, you know."
"Yes, master. Well... first I found the woman we are searching for; she's the daughter of a count in the city. Her name is Eileen Christopher."
I handed Yumi a copy of her profile from one of the internet sites, and she scanned it thoughtfully.
"Eileen is in her twenties and was supposed to be married a month-and-a-half-ago. She went missing shortly after her marriage was announced to the public. Her father, Jack Christopher, said he called local officials and reported her disappearance, but the general said it was never in their system. Jack said that he continued pressing the police, but they never had any information about her."
Yumi read her profile thoughtfully. "That's odd. He'd been pressing them all this time and it was never in their system?"
"No, master. Mister Christopher suspects she's been kidnapped," I told her. "He explained to me that Eileen and he got into an argument the night she went missing, and she stormed off to her bedroom. Later, he told me that he heard a scream, a cry of pain, and shattering glass. When he entered her room it looked a mess, and the window was broken. She was gone."
"A mess?" Yumi echoed. "Are you sure she's not just a slob?"
"I asked him the same, master. Mister Christopher said that she was the cleanliest, most organized child in their family."
"Hmmm...." Yumi sipped her tea. "What were they fighting about?"
"The marriage, master." I smiled a little. "Of course, her father wanted her to marry a famous singer, but she didn't want him. She wanted to marry one from a lower cast, but her father refused to accept that."
"And the police?" Yumi gazed up. "Did you figure out why she wasn't in the system?"
My smile widened. "Because she was never reported to the police, my lord."
Yumi's brows drew together.
"Mister Christopher had been calling the police landline, but they changed it months ago. He'd been calling someone else this whole time."
Her lips parted. "And the sender of the letter?"
"That's where it gets interesting." My eyes glowed a dark red as I smiled. "The sender of the letter was the man from the lower cast. The love-interest."
"Who is he?" Yumi demanded.
I bowed a little, still smirking. "He's from the castle; one of the guards of King Charles."
Yumi set her fist on her hand. "That's how he knew I was the guard dog. Almost no one knows that I police the underground. They just think I'm a rich brat. If he works for King Charles... then... that means that he knows who I am."
"Assuredly, my lord." I stood up straight, still smirking.
"The suspect list now, Sebastian." She held out her hand.
I pulled it from my pocket and held it out to her, and she took it, scanning the paper. "Three? There's three?"
"Those are the top three, my lord, but only one has a motive."
She gazed up. "What?"
"The top one, master." I set my finger on the paper, and she gazed down at it. "This man. He's our top suspect."
Her eyes widened at the sight of his name, and she just set it down, gazing up at me. "Sebastian... you must ready me at once. I must pay him a visit."
"Are you sure, my lord?" I smiled. "You need a plan in case things go wrong."
"I have you in case things go wrong," she snapped back. "So don't start. Now I order you, ready me at once."
