When studying the ability of telepathy, it was no surprise that the power contained within it, multiple classifications of additional sub-functions, or sub-class abilities. Telepathy between two Altiri did not present many opportunities for the discovery of these sub-class powers, but telepathy between an Altiri and their purged Human created a new type of telepathy where further modifications within the Altiri Cora could be made. In short, “phasing the connection” is a process by which the Altiri node shifts the sensory state of the connection, to which all sensory sharing is ceased or walled-off, without terminating the same connection. The most common analogy is placing a telephonic call on hold. Telepathic phasing gives two telepathic nodes the ability to silence all shared data transmissions between each other without shutting off the connection. Since initializing a telepathic connection is what costs the most amount of energy towards the ability, it was not always favorable to disconnect and reconnect frequently. Reconnecting also required a fair amount of time to pass before it could be attempted with success anyway. However, in the case of phasing, the telepathic connection is still active even though both nodes can no longer hear from or directly communicate with each other. Placed in this passive state, the amount of psionic energy needed to keep the connection going does increase ever so slightly, but is generally easier to handle than a telepathic reboot. While the weaker nodes were incapable of putting a connection into phase themself, they did prove capable of learning how to concentrate a beam of psionic energy into their own connection in such a way where their Altiri node would detect or sense this small burst of psionic energy (during passive phase). Using this as the signal, the Altiri node de-phases the connection, bringing the state of the link back to normal. Some of the more advanced purged experiments proved to be capable of de-phasing a connection all on their own after enough practice, though such results were not always reliable. There were also downsides to using this sub-ability. The benefits generally outweigh the risks, but only when phasing is used effectively and responsibly. The most notable downside is that the energy consumption of maintaining the telepathic connection does not end because a connection has been phased. While one would expect the load on both nodes to be reduced by this method, the load is actually increased rather than decreased. The leading explanation for why suggests that both nodes become less capable of sharing each other’s psionic energy through telepathy while it is phased, though the meat of the explanation truly ends there. The level at which the energy consumption increases is not very large of a difference, but if a connection is phased for a very long period of time, it will eventually become less efficient than simply shutting down a connection and reconnecting again hours later. It depends on the timing, prior strength and current strength of the connection, and the potential level of both Scions. While phasing provides energy saving benefits, these benefits are actually lost if too much time passes while in phase. Another downside to this phasing technique is that it requires the weaker node to learn how to project a response signal in the first place, less the technique for de-phasing be a planned static timer running down. This isn’t usually a big deal, but with emphasis placed on the effects of aging and the gradual decline in capability of a Scion as they get older (Global Psionic Atrophy), something as simple as de-phasing a connection might not be as easy when years of time move on. A final downside for this ability is the 3-4 cycle rule. When the connection is phased and de-phased, something about the telepathic connection, or rather both Scions changes overall in unknown ways. It isn’t noticeable until the consequences strike if they strike at all. Two nodes who phase and de-phase within the same 24 hour period can only repeat the process 2 more times (for a total of three attempts per day). If this number is exceeded, specifically, if a telepathic connection is phased in and out more than 3 times in a 24 hour period, then on the fourth attempt to phase the connection, the telepathic link will suddenly shut down instead. The duration of this shutdown before a new link can be made can vary greatly, but is usually longer than 2 hours. More than 3 phasing attempts corrupts the link altogether. On top of that, if two nodes phase and de-phase a connection more than 2 times within the same hour, the connection will also fail. These effects are clearly reproducible, though poorly understood. Telepathic phasing is still a relatively new psionic ability that only the Altiri can fully access. Many theories have tried to get into the process of what might be happening, but the AVPSI has yet to pursue any solid leads to solving this small mystery. They do agree that the 1-hour rule and what goes on with phasing (when phasing goes wrong) is related, given the similarities. In the 1-hour rule, when a telepathic link is disconnected, both of those two nodes must wait about 1 hour before they can establish a new telepathic connection with each other, which is initially the beneficial reason for phasing in the first place. This 1-hour natural law is also unexplained. The AVPSI has no explanation for why this happens, or even much of an idea on how to explain what telepathic phasing is, outside of what it does.
