To A Friend

Drink as much and you like

But you’ll still be there in the morning

God glances down at you with distain

And hounds you every night and day

Though you don’t believe in demons still

You cry until you’re mourning.

I tried to help you night and day

But all you did was push away

Then you grew your own damn wings

And left me to die in your stead.

Is that how you repay a friend

Who helped you night and day?

Is that how you repay a friend

Who loved you more than she could say

And I hope you really love her

And hope she treats you well

Because she’ll treat you better

Than I ever will.

And you deserve a loving touch

Not one that burns like acid

A sweet and loving word or two

Not a bitter writer

Drink as much as you like

But you’ll still be there in the morning.
