I Fell Off The Edge Of The World Today - Interpretation

Interpretation is vital to any thinking mind

It’s why there’re so many religions and philosophies

Some proudly displayed with more zest than

Their brothers and sisters that read the same book

Perhaps not even reading only listening

To an interpretation of an interpretation

Of something thrice translated

With little regards for tone or lexical gaps

In the text written by two toasted men

Months in a pub outside of Bethlehem

And likely, it was told to them by a man

Who knew a man who knew a hippie preaching

Peace and love until he was nailed to a cross

Dousing the Hebrews converted in blood

He died for our sins, so be sure to behave

He died for our sins but he forgives

He drank wine—

But don’t have it on your wedding night

Time to fight a holy war for peace on earth

Covered in the blood and guts of the fallen

We should hold love and understanding

For we are all children in the eyes of God

But birthed in a different color or way

And honoring God with a different ritual

Turns us all to stark raving lunatics

Listening in terrifyingly blind devotion

To men who seek profit from our faith

If there is a God and I’m not weighing that,

My skepticism can be put aside for now,

If there is a God he would be ashamed

If our perception of him is right and true

If he is benevolent, kind, all knowing

Then surely some of the most devoted

Will take a painful route to the fires

Set up for those who also caused pain

Set up for rapists and Holocaust deniers

How can interpretation damage so much?
