Looking back at my childhood,

Remembering how blue and grey the skies were,

How those long-past days have fluttered away

Like moths under a lonely streetlight.

As a mere ray of sunlight races across the night sky,

Erasing it from the day,

We try to hold onto these youthful moments,

To place them on a shelf in a jar, to relive later.

But time marches on, and we forget these moments

In the hustle and bustle of life.

We forget the simple pleasures of youth,

How a simple pile of dirt became a whole world

That only we lived in, dreaming of cities or projects

In our own minds.

Nothing lives outside the dream, but at last,

We grow up, we grow out of childish dreams,

And we leave the safety of our parents' embrace,

The safety of their home.

Sometimes they are the reason we retreat

Into our own minds,

Not to be reminded of the hurt and pain they inflict on us.

I want to relive the pleasures of my youth and smile one last time

Before I have to return to reality,

To stand back and dream of what those moments looked like.

For some reason, it's a jar of moths,

And they still flutter in the dark cellar of my mind.

I simply wonder, if I open the jar,

Would they fly away, and would I forget my childhood

And all the things in it?

To be forced to just live in the here and now, the present time.

I decide to hold onto my jar of moths,

Even if they aren't butterflies—

It's all I have that was good in my life.
