They were on a mountain road in Peru and had parked by a farmer's field full of coca leaves.

Jake and Vince were curious about the coca leaves. They had heard that chewing them could help with altitude sickness and fatigue. They also wondered what they tasted like and if they had any other effects. 

They decided to stop their SUV near a field of coca plants and pick some leaves. They didn't think anyone would notice or care, besides it was nightfall.
