“Come, we have to reply to this letter from this anonymous person. Look, this letter is really funny.” Phillip said to Bensimon. They both looked at me, and I pretended not to hear them, but I overheard them reading out the letter.
“Dear Thank you Store,
Life is bitter enough, without dark chocolate. That’s why I want to share with you this story about the post post modern myth which original from MK.
I got the idea of the title from a post modern fairy tale I once read written by a famous contemporary Japanese writer. It was about a boy who wanted very much to have sex with his teenage sweetheart and she rejected him saying it was her wish to remain a virgin until marriage.
I never thought something similar would have happened to myself.
I live in private housing, same as my teenage girlfriend. We were by no means rich, but private housing means something in Hong Kong. She’s the popular girl and I liked her. I was a popular guy and she liked me. She’s not the prettiest, but she’s the one all the guys would chase in our year. I am not the richest or most handsome, but I did basketball and the girls all fell for me. It was only natural we got together. We never had any worries to talk about. The time was always light and happy. We didn’t have to talk about anything, because we had everything going for us.
Once you get to know her, you know she’s not really a typical kong girl. For example, she never asked me to buy her expensive bags or eat expensive meals for example during our dating. She likes starbucks occasionally, but mainly she likes the environment more than the coffee. It was a childhood sweetheart that sounded like too good.
As I was a growing boy, I knew I had sexual urges. But because I loved her dearly, I, a decent man would wait until we were at least adults to pursue such an act. By then we were dating already for 3 years, when we both got into university. As heaven would have it, we both got similar grades and got into the same university and even the same dormitory.
And then I finally raised the question. “Could we have sex? Do you want us to become closer?” I asked her one day after retiring from the library together. I still remembered there was light rain, and I escorted her back to her dormitory. She smiled, embarrassed. I thought that meant she accepted me, but she didn’t let me into her room. I went back to my dormitory wondering what I did wrong.
I tried to bring up the issue with her a few more times, during lunch, during tea time, during hobby times, during library times, during dinner, during our tennis gatherings, during snooker gatherings, when we were in private. I thought if I tried hard enough, I could move her, and she would nod and say yes to me.
She always said no. There was no reason given. What could be the reason? I was feeling fed up, and feeling belittled. I felt we could be together at that point. What could be stopping us? She always said no. and she wouldn’t tell me why. I had to find out what was wrong, so I asked her best female friend.
We met in a café shop, me and her best female friend. She looked at me winking, like a smart little bird. After some small talk, I finally brought up the question, why do you think she’s not sleeping with me?
“How could you not know?” She said, with a soft sigh. “You really know nothing don’t you!”
“What do you mean?” I asked, really clueless.
“Guys would always be chasing sex, and up to the point they got it, they would have a fixed determined abstract idea of how much they had to give, be it money or effort. In simpler words, guys would calculate the money and time spent up to the point of sex, and that would determine the worth and value of the girl.”
“I don’t get it. That’s insane. I wouldn’t think of such a thing.”
“but you would still be governed by it.”
“so she thought I am still not worth it? So what happens after she had sex with me?”
“and then you would calculate whether how much it was to get her to sleep with you consecutively”.
“That’s crazy. Are you both crazy?”
“but guys are like that. When girls let you have sex. The love aspect would disappear. Girls can’t be too easy.”
“Are you kidding me? So she would never have sex with me so she wouldn’t depreciate?”
I didn’t know how much longer I had to keep waiting, or contributing to her cause, or whether it would change her mind at any point in the future. Besides I was too angry with the reply, which she never confirmed herself by the way. I had decided, if it was all true, she was crazy.
Phillip paused. “So what happened?” Bensimon asked, perking his head.
“He broke up with her. She never replied him.” Phillip said, and read the end of the letter:”I broke up with her. I could not bear investing more time or money.
I couldn't bear dating a woman who was like a Geisha selling her first night in Gion. I supposed I could have betted more money and bought her something expensive, hoping it would weaken her resolve, I could probably afford that with a few months part time salary. Nevertheless, I decided against it. I simply did not follow rational reason for irrational spending. i followed my heart and hoped she would change her mind. She didn't.
As humans always followed their objective feelings, eventually we broke up. Months later, I began to date the girl who told me about the effect of depreciation before and after sex. She told me why she liked me. I couldn’t agree with or remember the reason. But she taught me a lot of things. I felt she understood me.

Truthfully speaking, the girl wasn’t as pretty or as moving as my first girlfriend. And I lost contact with my first girlfriend but I kept wondering if she ever liked me. Because I heard about the original story from the Japanese writer, where the girl promised the guy she would sleep with him once she was married; I kept thinking my first girlfriend would come back to me due to some unspoken promise with me – something to be realised in the future, if she had truly liked me. Say she would one day change her mind. I talked about this with my new girlfriend.
She laughed. “You read too many novels. I doubt very much Japanese wives are like Mademe Bovary. Were you expecting your ex girlfriend to come back to you and say something like, ‘Oh, I really like you and one day I will depreciate enough to randomly have sex with you. But at the moment it’s just not possible’”
“What a genius! That’s exactly what I had in mind.” I said, half kidding, and was so relieved my new girlfriend was not offended by it. “I would assume by that theory, my first girlfriend would at one point, depreciate a lot in terms of money and time required to get her laid, and then keep depreciating until she’s very cheap. She would then be an easier target to get laid. It all seemed to make sense to my pea brain.
My new girlfriend smiled and said nothing. Her smile reminded me of the slit mouthed ghost woman.”

Bensimon shook this head. “We wouldn’t respond to something so silly. Not that that writer of this letter was expecting a response. It was probably a spam. ”
Phillip was half amused and said, “I guess if she didn’t want to be “depreciated” in his eyes, she better never try the first time with him.”
“and she didn’t.” Bensimon said, taking the letter from Phillip’s hand. “That’s the end of the letter. I bet if the guy grew exponentially in wealth, the woman would depreciate faster. Humans really are strange.”
Royce walked in on them, and said, “Men should be more generous with money and spoiling their loved ones. Having sex before marriage also had ugly implications. ”
And silence which felt cozy and unalienated fell upon us. We continued on our jobs in our hands.
