As soon as Zhenna stepped through the door, her mother slapped her with a back hand, her wedding ring nicking the girl’s top lip. “Why do I have to repeat instructions to a fourteen year old? When school’s over find yourself at my office immediately!”
Zhenna’s hand hovered over her mouth as she passed her tongue repeated at the broken skin. “There was a drama club rehearsal today and afterwards I helped out the sage bowl team.” She answered between licks.
Her mother’s eyes lit up with anger. “I thought I told you not to get involved with the Drama club?! And you’re not even a reserve member of the sage team, why are you staying back?”
“I was helping with the general knowledge questions, Ms. Degenerese asked me to help prep questions for—
“That’s Kharissa’s responsibility not yours! You better get your head on Zhenna, I will not tolerate a failure under my roof. Your school work is more than enough to keep you busy.” Then her mother added slowly and deliberately. “I don’t want you in the drama club.”
“I’m not! I was already assigned to help with music for the play, I couldn’t just not do it. I already told Mrs. Puffe I’m not joining.” Zhenna said defensively.
Her mother held her in her gaze, long and hard.
“There’s nothing wrong with her experiencing teenage life a little.” Her father stepped in. “This is the only chance she has to be involved with Sage Bowl. Her friends are on the team and she wants to help them win. And joining the Drama club can benefit her by strengthening her confidence to talk in front of large groups.”
Zhenna’s mother turned to her husband, flabbergast plastered on her face. “You don’t tell me how to raise, my children.” She said clam but spitefully. “I will not allow my children to waste their lives like you.”
Zhenna watched her father, he seemed unmoved by her mother’s insult, but something in his eye had shifted slightly. He sighed defeatedly then added “Zhenna has to live her own life. If you keep making decisions for her, later when you die she won’t know what to do.” He walked off, not giving his wife the chance to say more to his face.
Zhenna’s mother chased after her father, demanding to know what he meant; whether he was threatening to kill her. Another argument ensued, same as before, she seemed to be the root cause of her parents’ arguments. Zhenna sighed.

A tug on her skirt took out of her thoughts. Reuben looked up at his sister with sad wondering eyes. She met her brother’s stare, the two stayed still, not saying anything. Reuben hugged his sister burying his face in her clothes, his little body trembled as he tried to stifle his sobs. Zhenna laid a hand on his head.

“Hey Reub, wanna play a little basketball?” Zhenna asked just over a whisper.
Reuben shook his head and hugged his sister tighter.
“Come on, let’s go change.” She pat his back gently.
Zhenna saw the worry in her brother’s eyes when he raised his head to look at her. “I’m okay.”
But her words did little to reassure him, Reuben cried himself to sleep, his tears also brought Zhenna to tears.10Please respect copyright.PENANAMVCLlwpY4P
