The next day at school, news of Mizuha's first place achievement in the art competition spread quickly. As she walked through the halls, she received congratulations and words of praise from classmates and teachers.
When Mizuha arrived at her classroom, she was surprised to find a crowd of classmates gathered around her desk. As soon as they saw her, they broke into applause and cheers.
"Mizuha, congratulations!" said one classmate. "We heard that you got first place, that's amazing!" added another.
Mizuha blushed, feeling a bit embarrassed by all the attention. "Thank you everyone. I worked really hard on my painting, so I'm glad it paid off," she said modestly.
Some of her classmate girl gave her a big hug. "I'm so proud of you! I knew you could do it. You're so talented," she gushed. The classroom buzzed with excitement and admiration for Mizuha's accomplishment.
"Can you tell us about the painting you made?" asked a boy from her class. Mizuha went on to describe the watercolor landscape she had painted of her and her friends enjoying a cherry blossom viewing party.
As she told the story behind the painting, her classmates listened with rapt attention. Many of them asked follow-up questions, curious about the competition, the other participants, and how she handled the pressure.
After Mizuha finished sharing details, her teacher entered the classroom to start homeroom. "Okay everyone, let's get to our seats so we can begin," he said, gently dispersing the crowd around Mizuha's desk.
As the chatter died down, the teacher added, "Again, congratulations Mizuha on your competition success. You make us all proud." Mizuha smiled brightly, soaking in praise from her peers. She felt grateful and motivated to keep honing her artistic talent.
Just like in Mizuha's class, Honoka and Hiroshi received a lot of congratulations and attention when they arrived at their classroom in 3C.
As soon as Honoka slid open the door, her classmates erupted into applause and cheers. "Great job getting 3rd place Honoka!" said one boy. "Yeah, we're so proud of you and Hiroshi," added a girl.
Honoka blushed, feeling a bit shy from all the praise but also proud of her accomplishment. "Thank you everyone, I'm really happy I placed in the top 3," she said with a smile.
Hiroshi also received pats on the back and words of congratulations from the other students. "Hiroshi, 5th place is awesome! You did really well," said his friend Yamada. Hiroshi rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly and said "Thanks man, I tried my best on my beachscape painting."
Their homeroom teacher quieted the lively classroom down. "Let's congratulate Honoka and Hiroshi on representing our class so well in the art competition," he announced. The whole class broke into applause again.
"As expected from our talented art club members! Keep up the great work you two," the teacher added. Honoka and Hiroshi thanked their teacher and classmates for the kind words.
As Honoka took her seat, her friend Yui gave her a high five. "The art club is definitely on the rise with you and Hiroshi! I can't wait to see what you'll create next," Yui said excitedly. Honoka smiled, feeling motivated to keep improving her skills.
Mizuha, Honoka, and Hiroshi's competition achievements quickly spread beyond just their classes. News of their success was posted on the school bulletin board for all students to see.
During the break, many younger 1st and 2nd year students gathered around the bulletin board, impressed by the art club members' accomplishments. "Wow, the 3rd years got 1st, 3rd, and 5th place!" said one 1st year girl. "Their art club seems so talented," added another student.
Among the crowd was a shy, quiet 1st year girl named Megumi. She stared at the bulletin board post about Mizuha's 1st place win, feeling very inspired. Megumi loved art but was too timid to join any clubs.
"Megumi! There you are," said a voice. Megumi turned to see her energetic classmate Mika approaching. "This girl, she's so popular because she's pretty...I feel shy to talk to her," Megumi thought nervously.
"Are you interested in Mizuha-senpai's competition success?" Mika asked. Megumi blushed deeply, too anxious to respond.
Mika beamed, unfazed by Megumi's shyness. "You should meet Mizuha-senpai! She's classmates with our awesome 3rd year Shimizu-senpai. I could introduce you," offered Mika.
Megumi's eyes widened but she stayed silent. At Mika's offer, she felt overwhelmed. "I shouldn't bother them..." Megumi whispered, staring at the ground.
But Mika enthusiastically said, "It's no trouble! I really think you two would get along."
Megumi nervously twisted her braid. With Mika's encouragement, she gave a tiny nod, thinking maybe befriending Mizuha-senpai could help her shy heart blossom.
Megumi nodded hesitantly. Mika beamed and said, "Great! If you're interested in Mizuha-senpai and the art club, I can accompany you to check out their clubroom one day after school. That way you can get a feel for what they do."
Megumi's eyes widened in surprise. "Go...to their club?" she repeated nervously. Mika nodded enthusiastically.
"Don't worry, I'll be right there with you," she assured Megumi. "We can just observe quietly if you want. But it would be a good chance to see Mizuha-senpai and the club in action!"
Megumi played with her braid, feeling anxious but also curious. She had always admired the art club's talents from afar. The thought of seeing their clubroom made her heart flutter nervously.
"O-Okay..." Megumi finally said in a small voice. Mika smiled brightly. "Awesome! Let me know when you're free after school today. I can't wait to take you to meet Mizuha-senpai!" she said.
Megumi gave a shy, tentative smile back. With her outgoing friend Mika's help, maybe she could finally connect with the art club members she had long admired from a distance.
After their conversation, the bell rang, signaling that break time was over. "Oh, we better get back to class!" Mika said.
Mika and Megumi gathered their things and walked back to their classroom together. As they walked, Megumi thought to herself, "Mika is so popular, yet she's still so friendly to everyone, even a shy person like me."
Megumi glanced over at Mika, feeling grateful that her classmate had reached out to her. Even though Megumi was very shy and quiet, Mika had been kind and enthusiastic about introducing her to Mizuha-senpai and the art club.
As they reached their classroom, Megumi gathered her courage and said softly, "Th-Thank you, Mika, for everything earlier."
Mika turned and gave Megumi a warm, cheerful smile. "Of course! I'm happy I could help out. Don't hesitate to let me know if you need anything else!"
Megumi couldn't help but smile back slightly. Mika's bubbly friendliness made her feel just a little bit braver about coming out of her shell. Megumi took her seat, already looking forward to their visit to the art club to see Mizuha-senpai in action.
After school ended, Mika met up with her friend group. "Hey guys, I can't join you at the movies today. I promised Megumi I'd take her to observe the art club," Mika explained.
Her friends were disappointed but understood. "No worries! We can do it another time," they told Mika.
Meanwhile, Hikaru was talking with Mizuha. "Your competition win has inspired me. I want to check out another club that interests me today," he told her.
"Oh, which club?" Mizuha asked curiously.
"It's a surprise! I'll tell you about it after your art club meeting," Hikaru said with a grin.
Mizuha smiled. "Okay, have fun! I'll see you later." She headed to the art club as Hikaru went the opposite way to explore his mysterious club of interest.
When Mizuha arrived at her clubroom, Hiroshi and Honoka were already there. Mizuha told Hiroshi and Honoka how proud her classmates were earlier. Hiroshi and Honoka also told Mizuha the same thing happened in their class.
Honoka suddenly said, “Do you think we will get another junior to join us?” Hiroshi replied, “I don’t know, but based on our achievement, maybe some of them will want to join, I guess.” Mizuha nodded in agreement with Hiroshi's answer.
As they were chatting, suddenly there was a knock on the clubroom door. Then Mika said, “Good evening, Mizuha-senpai! Sorry for interrupting.” Mizuha replied, “Oh, Mika, good evening.”
Honoka then asked, “Mizuha, you know this girl? I heard she’s so popular in her year.” Mizuha replied, “Yes, I know her.”
Mizuha asked, “What brings you here? Do you want to join our club?” Mika then explained, “Actually, not me, but this girl which is my classmates wants to observe your club,” while gesturing to the shy Megumi with her.
Megumi then asked Mika, “Eh, you’re not joining? Then why did you accompany me here?” Mika replied, “Sorry, I already joined the band club,” while showing her guitar case bag on her back, “I just wanted to help accompany you here.”
Mika assured Megumi, "Don't worry, I'll stay here with you the whole time you observe the art club today."
Megumi felt a wave of relief hearing Mika's support. Mizuha and the other club members welcomed the two girls into their room. Megumi glanced around shyly as she stepped inside.
"I'm Honoka, nice to meet you!" the upbeat girl introduced herself. "What's your name?"
"I-I'm Megumi," the shy girl replied softly, staring at the floor.
Mizuha gave her a gentle smile. "Are you interested in art, Megumi? What made you want to see our club?"
Megumi responded almost in a whisper, explaining she liked art but was too nervous to talk to people usually.
As Mizuha observed the timid girl, she was reminded of her friend Elly when they first met. Back then, Elly could barely string two words together out of shyness. But after becoming friends, she had opened up.
Mizuha wondered if with time and encouragement, shy little Megumi could also gain confidence like Elly did. She felt determined to help this junior art-lover feel at ease in their club.
After that, Mizuha, Honoka, and Hiroshi showed Megumi the kinds of activities they do during club time. They also told her stories about their achievements at the recent competition, and about their former president Taki who always supported them.
As Megumi glanced around the room, her eyes landed on a beautiful drawing that made her gasp. "Wow, this is so pretty!" she exclaimed as she and Mika went over to examine the artwork.
Hiroshi explained, "Yes, isn't it lovely? That's the drawing Mizuha did that won 1st place at the competition."
Mika's eyes widened. "Wow, Mizuha-senpai, this is gorgeous! No wonder you won with this."
Megumi was enthralled by the drawing and shyly asked Mizuha, "Senpai, what is this drawing about?"
Mizuha smiled and replied, "Oh that one? It's a special moment from the Sakura viewing party I had with my friends last month. That time together meant a lot, so I wanted to capture it in my art."
Mika peered closer and said, "Oh you're right, I can see Shimizu-senpai and Kitamura-senpai here too!"
Megumi gazed admiringly at the beautiful artwork, even more impressed with her skilled senpai. She hoped that someday she might be able to create such stunning art too.
After observing the art club meeting, Megumi was inspired by the passion and talent of the members. Seeing Mizuha's beautiful cherry blossom painting made her hope she could create similar stunning art someday.
Megumi also admired Honoka and Hiroshi's enthusiasm when explaining their works. She could tell this club would nurture her artistic soul.
As Mizuha approach Megumi, she asked eagerly, "So did you have fun watching the club? What did you think? do you want join our club?”
In that moment, Megumi made her decision. She shyly approached Hiroshi and saying "I-I want to join the art club, if you'll have me..." she said softly.
Hiroshi warmly replied, "Of course! We'd be delighted to have you join." He accepted her application form.
When Mizuha and Honoka heard that Megumi wanted to join the art club, they were overjoyed. The three senior members smiled brightly, pleased to welcome a new junior member to their club.
"This is so exciting!" Honoka said enthusiastically. "I can't wait to get to know you better, Megumi."
"Having you join us makes all our effort to share our passion feel worthwhile," Mizuha added warmly.
"We'll be very happy to have you participate in the club activities with us," Hiroshi told Megumi with a kind smile.
Megumi blushed shyly but had a small, happy smile on her face too. She felt grateful and thrilled to be accepted into this friendly, nurturing art club community.
With a new member joining them, Mizuha, Honoka, and Hiroshi were motivated to make the club as engaging and fulfilling for Megumi as possible. Their junior's presence brought them energy and inspiration.
After that, the club session ended as the clock struck 6:00 pm. Mika left with Megumi, saying, "Good for you, Megumi. You finally joined the art club," Mika remarked. Megumi replied shyly, "Thank you, Mika. Thanks for accompanying me to meet them. I really appreciate it. Um, can I get your contact number?"
"Sure, why not? Oh yeah, I still have your contact... even though most of our classmates have already exchanged numbers with me," Mika replied.
Walking together, both of them engaged in conversation. At the same time, Mizuha stood behind them, smiling. As Mizuha reached the school gates, Hikaru was already waiting for her. Approaching Hikaru, Mizuha asked, "You look happy. Did something good happen inside your club room earlier?"
Hikaru replied, "Yeah, actually, my club gained a new cute junior member today. There she is," pointing to Megumi, who was walking ahead of them.
Curious about Hikaru's club, Mizuha inquired about which club he had joined. Hikaru revealed that he had joined the computer club that day. He wanted to learn programming and had plans to take programming courses in college after graduating from school. Impressed by his aspirations, Mizuha expressed her determination to work hard to enter an art college after graduation. Hikaru responded, "Let's work hard together to make our dreams come true." They continued walking home together as usual.
As Mizuha walked home with Hikaru after the exciting club activities, she felt contemplative watching the sunset's vibrant hues stretch across the sky.
She found herself thinking of the day's events - the thrill of gaining a new member in Megumi, and seeing Hikaru's enthusiasm for the computer club.
Mizuha felt grateful for all the friends, old and new, that made her high school days so meaningful. She hoped to guide Megumi just as Taki had once guided her.
As Mizuha watched the sun sink below the horizon, she felt ready to embark on this next chapter with an open heart. Creativity flowed through her artist's soul.
With Megumi's arrival, a new passion was sparked within Mizuha for nurturing talent. She looked forward with positivity to the art club's future.
