They finally left and as usual, mom started her pep talk "what is wrong with you guys, why are you always picking on Dorothy, it's been over 5 months since you saw her last and today you finally get to see her and all you can think of is to fight with her seriously?" I was pretty sure she was reviewing the reactions on Uncle Michael and Aunt Beth in her head right now.
"Oh God" I and Keira muttered at the same time, don't get us wrong, our mom is a sweet person and shouting really isn't her thing but for crying out loud, she should stop caring about what people think of us.
I naturally, did not answer but Keira being the *good child* decided to respond "mom, we didn't pick on Dorothy, she should learn to mind her business and stop interfering. Besides Kyle is right after all she's jealous. And mom, Uncle Michael and Aunt Beth doesn't seem to care what Dorothy does so why do we have to be all Perfecto around 'em?"
Mom's gaze softened "look, my darlings...." She started but Dad interrupted "you know what? Why don't we just forget about this, is it me or this brownie reminds me of mom's home made cookies?" Dad asked cunningly "no way" mom refused but I noticed a smile playing at the corner of her lips.
"C'mon mom please" I and Keira pressed on and she giggled still refusing "Rachael, c'mon" Dad called out "okay fine, I'll make it" she said with a smile on her face, "but the taste would be a little bit different, I have a new recipe I want to try" "as long as it's better" Dad chipped in then ducked barely avoiding a punch in the chest from Mom.
Keira and I cleared our throats "we'll be in the kitchen" she dragged Dad "Rachael, I have a match to watch, Arsenal is playing" he complained "there's no way you're leaving me alone in this" she answered. "Why don't we just forget the cookies for today? What do you think kids?"
"No!" We responded at the same time and I heard mom chuckle and Dad grumble.
Unluckily for me, I wasn't able to relish the moment because my phone beep just then. It was my alarm.
Keira mouthed to me when she noticed the change in my countenance: what's wrong?
I mouthed back: it's my alarm, we've got to go.
Now it was her turn to frown: can't we postpone it?
I shook my head and she grumbled which kind of got mom's attention "why do you two look like someone forced a ball of slime down your throats?" She asked furrowing her eyebrows.
"er, mom, actually" I stuttered, I'm not the best at facing mom and making an excuse to skip one of her favorite recipes. So I did what I knew how to do best in situations like this: behave cowardly and push it to Keira. "Mom, actually, Keira has something to tell you" she glared at me has if she wanted me to disappear (don't worry, I've gotten used to it).
"Mom, you know how bad we want to taste the new recipe right?" She started sweetly "okay?" Mom's eyes darted between the two of us "but, something sort of came up, and we have to go, to the warehouse of course" she concluded and mom asked the question I feared she would ask "what time is it?"
"It's not that late mom" I said "what time is it?" She asked again "it's a little after 10" she looked at me "10:39, so can we g..." She didn't even allowed me to finish, "No" she said firmly.
"Mom but it's important" Keira whined "and I said no, it's too late for you to walk on the streets of Morelia" she turned her attention back to the flour she was kneading "we'll be careful" "No".
"Dad" I turned to him instead "Rachael, they said they'll be careful.." mom cut him off "they're not going" he turned back to me "you're not going".
"Fine, we'll be in the parlour" I walked out of the kitchen with Keira trailing behind me.
When we were out of earshot, she whispered to me "we're going right?" "Of course we're going" I replied in a duh kind of voice "we'll bounce when it's 11:00" I checked my wrist watch, we had about 15 minutes left. "But isn't it too late like mom said?" I stared at her blankly "seriously, you want to go chicken out now?" I asked her incredulously "okay fine, I'll go get my laptop" she sighed.
I'd like to tell you that things worked out the way we planned, we finished eating (and the cookies were nice by the way, I thought you'd want to know), made a random excuse to leave the parlour, sneaked out of the house and reached the warehouse. But no, as usual, things went wrong.
We'd just finished sneaking out through Keira's bedroom window when we heard a voice "I knew you guys were up to something" we turned back in shock to see Dad leaning on the pavement with his arms crossed. My brain started running at 200 km/hr per hour trying to formulate an excuse "we.....uh wanted to..." I started glancing at Keira anxiously "wanted to take out the trash" she completed. I gave her a look as if saying *that's the best you've got?*
"Wanted to take out the trash? Dad started like it was the lamest thing he has ever heard "why didn't you tell us? Why didn't you use the front door? Or the back door? And most importantly, where is the trash you want to dispose?" He gave us a look as if saying seriously? "Dad we can explain...." Keira started "I know right? At least if you want to sneak out, do it like a Robertson, do it without getting caught" he said casually.
I grinned, my dad has always been cool like that "we're sorry sir" we said at the same time. "It's fine, I know it's important that's why I'm not going to tell your mom. But if she should find out herself, you're on your own, I'll pretend I don't know anything. You got that?"
"Yes sir" we said simultaneously.
"Make me proud. Good luck" he called after us then we hurtled down the path to the warehouse.
I just hope nothing goes wrong.
After a while....
"Kyle?" "what?" "so, about that video...." she trailed off "what video?" she quirked her eyebrows "you're going to deny it?" I honestly didn't want to tell her about it now, if the video could scare me, I wouldn't want her to watch it "it's that bad?" she asked halting to open the door of the warehouse.
I was about to reply when I noticed movements in the warehouse "Keira, step back" I instructed grabbing a wooden club from the side of the wall. "what's wrong?" "there seems to be someone inside the warehouse, or should I say, people inside the warehouse".
The last time we'd gotten to the workshop and met a few uninvited people, it didn't go well at all. It was a couple of teenagers who thought it was quite funny to drop a bomb that only God knows where they got from inside our compound and when it went BOOM, the sound affected my sister and got her in coma for a few weeks, so yeah I'm not that thrilled to meet someone in my warehouse. if anything, I'm annoyed, very annoyed.
