Peter ran to the laundry and tried to shut off the water coming from the main. But the ball valve wouldn't budge. Every second he couldn't get the valve closed, he panicked more.
Switch off the mains when you're doing electric work and cut the mains when you're plumbing. He'd forgotten to do just that before sawing off the angle valve under the bathroom sink.
Peter stomped on the valve arm to loosen it; instead, the valve broke off with a section of pipe. Water burst into the laundry, ricocheting off objects in its path.
