It was on a cold winter night that Viktor arrived in a small town in rural America. He had been traveling for weeks, and he was tired and hungry. He found a small motel on the outskirts of town and rented a room for the night.
As he lay on the bed, staring up at the ceiling, he wondered how long he would have to stay in this town before he had to move on again. He had no idea what he would do or where he would go next. But for now, he was content to rest and enjoy the peace and quiet of the night.
Suddenly, he heard a knock on the door. He got up and went to answer it, wondering who it could be at this hour. When he opened the door, he saw a young woman standing there, shivering in the cold.
"Can I help you?" he asked.
The woman looked up at him, and for a moment, he thought he saw something in her eyes that he hadn't seen in a long time. It was a spark of curiosity, of wonder, of something that he couldn't quite put his finger on.
"I'm sorry to bother you," she said, her voice trembling. "My car broke down, and I don't have anywhere else to go."
Viktor looked at her more closely and saw that she was indeed shivering. He could smell the scent of her blood, and his instincts kicked in. He wanted to reach out and grab her, to drink from her and satisfy his hunger.
But he knew that he couldn't do that. He had to control himself, to resist the temptation, no matter how strong it was.
"Come in," he said, stepping aside to let her in. "I'll make you some tea."
