It was supposed to be a normal Tuesday . I wish I knew better than to risk living this one.
2 AM , Monday.
The doors locked and every ones asleep. I look at the plate of pears by my cabinet , the knife still on it. Taking hold of it I dare to place it gently on my skin. Mum never trusted me with sharp knifes , '' Blunt knifes could cut through fruits.'' she would say. How smart of her.
Light glinting in a straight line captured by the metal against my thigh. My hands go numb realising the truth of the situation. A voice from the back of my neck pushes me to stab myself, growing louder until my ears hurt with its ringing noise. I thrust the knife forward carefully pushing it in along the glinting line. Soon the memories flow. Repeating the story I would cry myself to bed with. I could not speculate whether it was the dullness of the blade or my cowardness that the knife could not cut my into skin. Only leaving uneven skin along the scratches like streaks of pale crimson. My inability angered me further. Pathetic. Turning into a coldbloded murder my strikes become repetitive. Pressing harder each time until beads of red poured out. I pulled back looking at my skin. Patches of red extented up to my knee and blood dripping down it. Quickly cleaning up before I went back to sleep.
8AM , Tuesday.
I chose a pair of black mommy jeans and a cardigan. Walking down the school cafeteria, everybody looking their best and a buzz of excitement filled the air. But there , over their heads , hung colours of every possible shade . Shuffling into each other like the northern lights (aurora). I blink my eyes and try to concentrate. Someone takes hold of my arms and shakes me. Snapping out of my trance I realise its only Juddy. The colours over her head moving quickly from orange to yellow.
I keep staring at the colours over people's head as Juddy drags me into a girls washroom. "Here ."She shoves a black skirt in my hands. She forces me to change." You look like you do everyday in those."She argues.
" Are you saying I don't look good every day? "
" No , you do look good. But its our last picture day here.And I don't want you looking all basic." She sighs .
Alas she wins and I put the skirt on." See it looks beautiful on you."
" Thank god its below me knees." I blurt out admiring how it hung on my body.
" But you love short skirts."
Hides the marks." Dress code." I quickly say.
1 PM , Tuesday.
Its our turn to click the pictures. I had successfully hid the scars all day and had ignored the colours.'Surely I am hallucinating due to my trash sleeping schedule.' I sit down and quickly stand up to leave after the camera lights flashed with a clicking sound. The crowd near the booth gasped. I look around at the cloud of blue that settled over us. My body freezes as I follow the gaze of the crowd. Realizing they were staring at my skirt which had shifted up my knee , reaveling the marks of stale blood that had crystalized. I feel a hand push me away from the crowd as I sweared under my breath for removing the dressing over the skin . The hand leaves my side when we reach an empty corner of the library. Blackshirt blonde hair , its my bestie Basle. Juddy ' s head pops up behind his shoulder.
We sit on the floor. And that dammed skirt retreats further behind. Revealing some of the more gruesome wounds.They face me and my stomach twists looking at their anxious faces. Blue clouds hovering over them.
" What in the world made you do this? " Basle says pointing at my thigh.
" Nothing."
" Don't hide it anymore. You've been acting strange since our sleepover." His voice a bit shaky.
" Is it some thing I said? I'm sorry l was a bit tipsy that day and.." Juddy starts to cry.
I bite my cheeks to hold back my laughter.But Basle stares at me demandingly.
I take in a deep breath." Just listen to me first okay. This may sound crazy but its the truth." They nod as I continue .
"So on the night of our sleepover we had tried to summon spirits. Somebody did come up and I think it is attached to me. Its a demonic entity.'' Basle's mouth fell open.
'' What demonic entity?''Juddy asked biting her lips.
'' Witches. I think they are good . Feel them around and that day at the bridge. I.. I wasn't there to meet someone. I tried to jump but..''
''What the f*** ? Why?'' Basle taking hold of my arm. His colours had turned into a cobalt mist.
'' b..but they pushed me back. And yesterday they made me do this.'' I said looking down.
''And you said they are good.'' Basle scoffed.
I looked over at Juddy , she had turned into a porcelain doll , just staring at me.
'' I can see people's emotions now. Like colours over their head. And may be , I could read minds too. They must have wanted my blood for a ritual or something.''
'' Have you gone mad ! They could do nasty things. For gods sake they ain't tooth fairies here to give you money in turn for your tooth.Gees , they are going to drain you dead. '' He said raising his voice.
'' My Grandma was a witch.It runs in the family.'' I say calmly.
'' That's why you don't celebrate Thanks giving I guess.'' Juddy managed to utter.
'' All right. I'll believe all your witchy vonka shit if you can give a prove . Anything that might make me believe.'' he said.
'' All righty. Look in my eyes and I'll try to read your mind.'' I say claping my hands and he nods.
He takes in a deep breath and looks into my eyes. From the corner of my eye I could see the air around him turn pink .
'' Stop bluffing, liar.'' I could hear his thoughts.
'' Not a liar.'' I laugh as his eyes widden.
''What in the world? Oh God!! ....Don't think about it. Just don't.''
''Don't think about what? '' I ask.
''Let me hold both you hands in the holes of my sweater..
I look away feeling my cheecks burn. The colours over his head turn to gold and crimson. I could still hear the words. They were some popular lyrics but he did not sing it. It sounded more like a plead. I look down and meet his gaze.
'' Its too cold for you here , now.. ''
I could see his thoughts. Racing over the events of the day. Stopping at the moment when he say the scars and every thing blurred. He still did not back away. I knew he was aware of me being inside his mind but he let me in. It felt cold , like a blizard had just hit.
'' Do you...''
'' Obliviate.. .. Yes .''
'' Would've loved the potter series too much to actually fall for that spell.'' I giggle.
'' It works . Can see for yourself.''
He showed me the house. I opened the door and it all hit me . The blizard of everything he had kept hidden. Empty hallways .....His childhood home..... mum smoking in the bathroom...parents fighting......divorce....blood in the bathroom sink......cuts on his hands....me on the first day of sixth grade.....me on prom....him holding a rose.....
'' If I could go back in time... I'd shoot my shot..I'd risk it all .''
I close my eyes and he laughs. '' Thought only you knew all the magic in the world ,didn't you ?''he said.
''Umm..Guys. What's going on? Can someone explain m..'' Juddy wispered , a puzzled look on her face.
'' Nothing.'' I said.
'' I believe her.''Basle said chuckling. I wish I never read his mind.
