The freezing winds hammering against the window jolted us awake that morning.
Sobaka: What time is it?
Volk: You think I carry a damn clock?
Sobaka groaned, rubbing his face before sitting up.
Sobaka: Shit. We need to head out.
Volk: And why the hell are we in a rush?
Sobaka: Because the storm's only gonna get worse the longer we wait.
Volk: Have you even heard the winds outside? We step out there, and we're done for.
Sobaka: Stop being such a coward. It can't be that bad—
He yanked open the door. A blast of icy wind howled inside, nearly knocking him over. Within seconds, frost began creeping across the floor.
Sobaka: Uh... Yeah, never mind. Let's stay put.
Volk smacked the back of his head.
Volk: I told you.
Sobaka: Alright, alright! My bad, Mister "I Know Everything."
Volk: You should know better. We've been stuck in this hellhole long enough to understand how these storms work.
They sat back down, the room feeling even colder than before.
Volk: So, what's the plan now?
Sobaka: We wait. No point freezing to death out there.
Volk: Oh, now we wait. Got it.
Sobaka: Shut up.
Volk: And if we get stuck longer than expected?
Sobaka: We ration. Still got some cans of beans left. We can stretch 'em for two days if we don't get greedy.
Volk: Guess that'll have to do. Just gotta hope the winds cool down.
Sobaka: You want it to get colder? You good?
Volk: You know what I meant, dumbass.
Hours passed. We sat, watching the ice creep along the window, listening to the wind scream outside. With nothing better to do, we ate sparingly and tried to sleep early so we could leave first thing in the morning.
That would've been a solid plan—if not for the fact that I woke up around one in the morning with a bad feeling twisting in my gut.
The winds were still pounding against the window, but something was off. I sat up and squinted outside. No clouds. No movement in the sky. Just... an unsettling stillness despite the storm.
Then, out of nowhere, a shockwave ripped through the air.
The explosion slammed into my chest like a hammer, rattling my bones. My breath vanished. My mind blanked. For a split second, there was only noise—a deafening, concussive force that swallowed everything.
Then, just as suddenly, it was gone, leaving behind ringing ears and a pounding heart.
The storm had stopped. The winds had vanished. But our house? Absolutely wrecked.
Volk: What the hell?!
We scrambled outside, barely registering the destruction around us. A red and green light flared in the distance, casting eerie shadows across the ruined landscape.
Sobaka: What the fuck is going on?
Through the haze of panic and confusion, we spotted movement. Figures—six of them—wandering through the snow, looking just as lost as we felt.
Okami: That explains what happened but...
Inu: Where the hell are we?
Lykos: I was about to ask that, too...
Sobaka: Well, comrades, welcome to Russia. No clue how you got here, but damn, it's good to see some signs of life.
Volk: Where the hell are you guys from?
Kitsune: Well... Okami, Inu, and I are from Tokyo. Not born there, but it was home.
She started explaining what happened—about the disaster, about her mother, Kawa.
Inu: I hope she made it out... somehow.
Okami: We need to get back.
Skylos: How are we even gonna do that?
Volk: You could follow us. We've been trying to get out of here for, like, two weeks.
Alepou: And why should we trust you?
Volk: I mean... we could've just left you to die out here.
Alepou: Fair point.
Sobaka: Where are you three from?
Lykos: Lindos, Greece.
He explained their own bizarre journey—about the voice in his head, about the strange events leading up to this moment.
Volk: Wait—you heard a voice too?
Okami: You guys heard one as well?
Lykos: Huh?
Lykos, Okami, and Volk exchanged uneasy glances.
Lykos: Weird...
He kept talking, describing the sky, the snow, the eerie bubble they had been trapped in, and the moment the shockwave shattered it.
Volk: So the explosion came from there? Damn... that must've been strong as hell. If it reached Japan and Russia, that's some apocalyptic-level shit. HOW ARE YOU ALIVE?
Lykos: Honestly? No clue. Guess I'm just built different.
Alepou smacked him across the back of the head.
Lykos: Ow.
Alepou: Stop being stupid.
Sobaka: Are you two... together?
Alepou and Lykos looked at each other.
Alepou: Not yet?
Lykos: Maybe?
Sobaka: I'm taking that as a yes.
Skylos: Wait, what do you two mean? Did something happen while I was gone?!
Alepou and Lykos: Perhaps.
Sobaka: Oh, so it's fresh.
Lykos: Anyway... what's the plan?
Volk: First things first—find shelter. That house was the worst possible place to get hit.
Inu closed his eyes, focusing for a moment.
Inu: We head south. There's a small town there.
Lykos: And you know that how?
Okami: Apart from fire powers, he can see an hour into the future.
Kitsune: Then why didn't you see the Enenra hitting the city?
Inu: Because I don't use my power unless I have to. Takes too much energy.
Kitsune: Fair...
Skylos: Then let's start moving before the cold gets worse.
Volk: Agreed. Let's go.
The eight of us trudged through the snow, eventually arriving at the town Inu had mentioned.
Volk: Damn. So you really can see the future. But what if we had picked another direction? How do you know this was the "right" one?
Inu: I don't see just one future—I see possibilities. Picking the right path takes effort.
Lykos: Wait, do you actually experience those futures? Like, live them and then come back?
Inu: That's... exactly how it works. How did you know?
Lykos laughed nervously, memories of the forest flashing in his mind.
Volk: Alright, let's find a house to settle in.
Lykos: And food. Can't forget that.
Sobaka: Finally, someone with a brain.
Okami: Thank the gods. I'm starving.
We split up, scavenging through abandoned buildings. Twenty minutes later, we regrouped at a sturdy-looking house, stocked up with food and supplies.
As we ate, Lykos fell deep into thought. That nightmare... Was it really just a dream? Or was it a glimpse of something worse?
Then, a voice slithered into his mind.
Just let things flow. It's for the best.
Lykos stiffened. "Argos... was it you all along?"
His breath hitched. He stood up abruptly.
Alepou: You good?
Lykos: Yeah... just need the bathroom.
He locked himself inside, gripping the sink.
Lykos: What the hell am I supposed to do?
Laughter echoed in his head.
Fate is inevitable, little Ly. You'll see soon enough.
