The room around Phara was dark. The only source of light surrounding the room was the blueish light, which passed through the wide windows, of the full white moon.
In the room, Phara was sitting straight on the sofa that faced toward the television screen, which was near the window. Her pupils were lifeless, her wet hair shined because of the moonlight, and the school uniform she was wearing was also wet.
She sat still and stared at her reflection on the large television screen. After 10 minutes of sitting still, she finally got up from the sofa–leaving a large circular wet spot on the cushion. She walked slowly, almost trembling, towards the kitchen area and opened a cabinet from below the counter. She crouched to see what was inside. In the cabinet, lain tools–a black duct tape, a large black scissor, a dark yellowish rope, a hammer, and an ice cream box filled with nails.
Phara grabbed the rope and gently closed the cabinet. She also grabbed a plastic stool chair from the dining table and went back to the living room, she then placed it around 2 meters left from the television. She noticed a white-colored hook on the ceiling. She raised her left foot and her right foot to step on the stool chair, despite feeling the cold and wet sensation from her skirt, so she could place the rope on the hook.
After successfully tying the rope on the hook, she went down from the stool chair and grabbed an intermediate pad paper from her bag which she placed at the left on the rattan sofa. She ripped one piece of paper, grabbed a pencil from her pencil case, and wrote these words:
[To my beloved family,
Thank you mother and father for taking care of me and my brother for the past years. Even though I was not the best in school, you still supported me at every step I took. To my brother, I hope you’ll live a good life and grow as a wonderful person. I’m sorry for everything.
Signed,
Phara]
She dropped the pencil on the floor and stepped on top of the stool chair. She grabbed the hole in the rope and gently placed her head through the hole, staring at the window. Suddenly, she saw the moon glow with a white aura that was getting brighter and brighter. She closed her eyes because the glowing moon was too much for her two eyes to see.
When she squinted her eyes to check on the glowing moon, she instead found the shine of the sun outside a window, and she felt her body laying on a very soft and fluffy surface. She enjoyed the soft feeling for a slight moment, but when she went back to reality, she immediately rose her body and observed her whole surroundings.
‘Why am I in my room? Did I faint? Who brought me here?’
It took a minute for her to think about the things that she wasn’t able to witness while she was asleep.
‘But what was up with the moon that night? Was there some reported phenomenon that was supposed to happen yesterday which I didn’t know about?’
The unanswered questions in her head kept ringing. She was about to get off the bed, but she noticed something unusual on her knee.
‘Huh? Did my wound already heal? I remember it bleeding so much last night, yet it healed so fast overnight. Weird.’
She looked at the spot on her knee, which she recalled where the wound was, with a confused look. But she didn’t mind it for too long because she took it as good news. As she was about to get off her bed, a shouting voice called her from outside her room.
“Phara, breakfast is ready!”
‘... Mom. Her voice sounded lively, so she probably didn’t see the note that I left on the sofa. Perhaps it was blown away by the wind or the note camouflaged with the white cushion of the sofa.’ Phara thought of it deeply, but her mother called another person which completely distracted her thoughts.
“Sean, wake up! Breakfast is ready!”
Her mood changed negatively after hearing the name ‘Sean’. She bowed her head and made a twisted face whilst sitting on the bed. She didn’t think about it, she was merely displeased.
She raised her head and finally got off her bed. As she was walking to the door, she noticed her odd reflection in the mirror, which hung on the walls of her room. She quickly walked backwards to check her face in the mirror.
‘Why do I have long hair? Didn't I recently cut it short 1 week ago? Or is this one of my brother’s tricks again? No, no, he possibly can’t do that. Do hairs grow that quickly?’
She kept on making theories and questions in her head. All of a sudden, a sharp headache strikes her head. A memory of the glowing moon flashed in her eyes, and a voice echoed in her head.
“Go forth my child, for I have given you another chance to be anew.”
Phara’s eyes went back to reality and the sharp pain in her head disappeared. She panted heavily and sweat started dripping from her face, as if her energy had been worn out from the experience.
‘What was that?! It sounded otherworldly!’
Phara touched her ear with her palm and started rubbing it.
‘Another chance to be anew? This is very confusing...’
She calmed down for a while and her complexion came back to normal. Phara continued walking to the door, still anxious about the recent occurrence.
However, as she stepped outside her room, she saw Sean who had also just gone out of his room. His room was next to hers. Phara stared at Sean with surprised eyes, and the same goes for Sean.
