…”we went to a cafe and got coffee on Saturday, and I already met her dad…”
My hand stopped working on our project. I almost unwillingly tuned out all other conversations to listen to the one happening across the room.
“She’s amazing, we already planned our second date.”
Date. No…no way he has a girlfriend already. It’s been a month since he stopped talking to me like good friends, since he started ignoring me.
My eyes pricked. I shut them tight, there was no chance I was gonna cry in health class.
I turned to my friend sitting across from me and signed in ASL “Who’s he talking about?”
She signed back, “Molly, his girlfriend.”
I nodded as my heart sank. How does he move on so quickly?
I didn’t say a word to him the rest of class. Which was hard, he was easy to talk to.
The next day, I tried to ignore him again. Not that I wanted to, I was just protecting myself.
A week went by, we didn’t talk in person or text once.
I kept thinking back to when we’d have four hour text conversations, or when we’d walk to class together. We were definitely friends then, what about now? He doesn’t want to talk to me, that’s obvious.
My heart broke a little every time I saw him. I dreaded going to the classes we shared just knowing that he’d be there and still wouldn’t talk to me.
I was outside, walking to a different building for our biology class, allowing one tear to fall down my face. The cold wind would dry it up quickly enough. Just then, my shoe caught on the edge of the stone path and I dropped my binder, papers going everywhere.
”Damnit,” I muttered, more tears threatening to fall as I stooped down to clean up.
Suddenly, his hand was there as well. “Here let me help ya.” He was hastily gathering the paper and stacking them neatly.
I however, was staring with a shocked expression at the boy in front of me.
He looked up and saw my not yet dry tears, and asked, “Oh, are you ok?”
Screw it. “Y-you’re talking to me now? When did that happen.” I squinted at him, ready to defend myself from what he said.
”Oh man, look I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you…” he trailed off waiting for me to reply.
I almost laughed. “Never meant to hurt me? Row, you literally didn’t talk to me for a whole month! I thought you were mad, I thought I did something wrong. Then I find out you have a girlfriend already?”
”You’re completely right,” I could feel another apology coming, so I cut him off.
”Of course I am. You know what? I think it’s better if we just stay the way we are. Trying to be your friend when you don’t meet me halfway is too exhausting. Thank you for your help.” I took the papers and headed to class.
Yes my heart is still broken over him, but I can move on now, I can find someone who won’t break my heart again.
