Took a while to update but here it goes. The next thing we’re going to talk about for advice is now creating those characters. By now you have a general sense of what your story would be about both plot wise and thematically. Now we need to get on top of who’s going to be the participants in your stories.

Characters are probably the most essential part of your story by far. It’s the people we root for, hate, and love all at the same time. If those factors are not there people ain’t going to be really interested in your story.

So when it comes to the creation of one I do have to clarify that the way I do it is not the be all and end all of creating. I’m simply putting my process forward to at least get your mind sparking and develop your own way that works for you.

When I start to create a character it’s usually for the purpose of making their arc. Like, since The Elantra Pirates is over I will talk about one of the characters in it so if you haven’t read it don’t continue. Or if you don’t care or already have read it then let’s proceed. I created Shug Xilenth for the basic goal of having the arc of a character starting off weak and inexperienced then ending with him being more competent and helpful but still not being as successful as the main hero of the day. That will be more clear in the redrafted version of the story.

His backstory came directly second and that was helpful to me to fully understand how I was going to get him there. Backstory is one of the best ways you can do characterization, besides from dialogue. It’s an easy way to endear the audience to them with it being tragic or just straight up just a good nice person. It can make them interesting even if you’re making the villain.

His appearance and all the other traits about him came later and I honestly think that should be the standard for creating characters. Unless you want their looks, sexuality, or any other intrinsic qualities about the character that isn’t tied into the personality to be the main focus point of the arc you want them to go on, all of those qualities should be secondary.

I could have a section that delves into dialogue but I want to make a whole other thing for that because I said it was the best characterization. It’s also really hard to nail down so it’s probably the most important.

Anyways I know this one is short but if I had to fully explain I would go over the same process I made in the previous one about building up the story. Next one is going to be about…You know what I’ll keep that to myself.
