I joined years ago and though I admit I haven't been the most active, I am still here, poking my head in every now and then.
Contests in particular are one of the things that reels me back in. It provides just the right combination of pressure and incentive all while still making writing feel casual. Personally, it helps me with my goal of just putting words out of my head and into a screen. Plus you get a wealth of entries from the other participants.
