Not everyone without a friend; probably needs a friend...
When I was in school, there was this girl in our class that none of the other girls would talk to unless it was out of necessity. Like in a group project or because a teacher asked. It also didn't help that she refused to talk to anyone in the class.
In fact, she had transferred in really late, everyone had already settled into their cliques or made friends. It also didn't help that when she transferred in and had to introduce herself, her opening line was, "I don't want to be here. I want to go back north where my friends are." That rubbed us the wrong way; she was basically saying she didn't want to be friends with anyone in the class.
Of course, a few people tried in the first week to make friendly conversation. The teacher did ask us to be nice to the girl because she had a lot of adjusting and catching up to do. She ignored everyone! This girl acted like she was deaf, blind, and mute when people approached her. So everyone went on to ignore her.
We moved up to the next grade, and the first term, out of nowhere, she's at her seat and just starts crying. Of course, since she was ignoring us, we're ignoring her. The teacher turns around, sees her crying, and goes, "D are you alright?" "What did you guys do to D?" WTF.
We turn to look at the girl, and she just cries more. The teacher tries to comfort her, but she's ignoring the teacher too. She refuses to go to the counselor, or the office, or go take a walk. She just sits there in the class with tears pouring down her face. The teacher pauses the lesson and interrogates us about what's going on with the chick.
Of course, no one knows. The teacher is pissed at us; she thinks we're bullying the girl. She gives us a short "talking to" and then leaves the class to go to the counselor and the office.
When she leaves, we just look at the girl while she's crying. No one goes near her or tries to talk to her. I kind of feel bad for the chick; I hate to see people crying. I take a pack of tissues from one of the girls sitting next to me and go over to her.
The rest of the class is telling me to leave the chick alone. But I'm adamant that I want to try to help her. I hand her the pack of tissues, but she doesn't take it. So I opened it and held out a tissue to her. Still no movement. At this point, a couple of the girls are shouting at me to leave the chick alone. By the way, we're a class of 45 girls (it's an all-girls school). I take the tissue and try to wipe her tears away. At the same time, the teacher and counselor walk in...
Two things I can only piece together now as an adult: 1) The shouting from outside the class would have worried the teachers; 2) me with my hand in the girl's face, to an adult with a misinformed assumption of the situation in the class, added up to bullying. I got sent to the office. They also weren't listening to the other girls telling them I wasn't bullying the girl.
After the counselor tried talking to the chick, she comes to me in the office waiting area. I still don't know how a counselor adopts someone else's assumption of a situation and tries to "resolve it." She starts asking me if I've got trouble at home and why a normally friendly "A" student like me would decide to bully someone else, WTF.
I talked to her for about 15 minutes, trying to tell her I wasn't bullying the girl. But she was stuck on trying to get me to confess since D wasn't talking. Then one of the secretaries waltzes over with a chip on her shoulder, saying they're going to have to call my parents in to talk to the principal. I've nothing against fat people, but those two "adults" and D were fat, and for a while, the whole situation made me dislike fat people.
Anyways, the other secretary finds out that D's mom and sister went north for a few months and left her with her aunt. They call her aunt to talk to her. Turns out the girl was crying because she wanted to go north too! I got sent back to my class like nothing happened. Of course, none of those "adults" apologised for their mistakes.
I get home, and Mom is pissed at me... I get an evening-long lecture: first about bullying, second about getting into trouble at school, and third about meddling in other people's affairs. Her parting words were "mind your own damn business" and "leave people in the mess you find them in."
The next day I go to school, I make eye contact with the chick and she SMILES AT ME!! I had half a mind to punch her in the face. Needless to say, I completely ignored her after that, along with the counselor and the secretary.
