This story began with a simple thought: What kind of sparks would fly if a professional hitman and a serial killer were to meet? What are their codes of killing? While writing, I often felt as though I, too, was caught in the town’s relentless downpours, constantly exploring the mental worlds of these two extreme souls—worlds that are starkly different yet strikingly similar.
“The Hangman” and “The Nightstalker” are both monsters from the abyss; they have twisted and ugly sides, there’s no doubt about that. But as I wrote, I increasingly sensed their human side—they can be hurt, they can feel lonely, and they have little quirks and small desires.
Dorian Yun’s parrot, the sunflower fields, the vinyl record player that he was never tired of listening to, Benson Yang’s nicotine addiction, insomnia, and the cat that once curled up in his arms… These are not excuses to justify their murders; I simply wanted to endow them with a modicum of basic humanity, adding a touch of tenderness to the story.
May this faint glimmer in the abyss illuminate our shared persistence and curiosity regarding the essence of human nature.
Thank you for accompanying our two protagonists, for following Benson Yang into that clinic hiding blood-stained secrets, for listening to Dorian Yun’s rare, heartfelt words about the trauma of the fire, and finally, for driving with them in that Ford down that endless dusty highway.
