I died.
Again.
It wasn't on purpose this time I swear.
I was casually walking down the street, then my shoes came untied, and some stupid guy lost control of his car, drove on the sidewalk and hit me.
Tragic, I know thank God for second chances or three hundred and twenty-five of them, counting the incident just now. I knew the guy had hit me when I felt a roaring pain travel throughout my body in shock waves. The hit was so sudden I almost though it was some sick prank.
That is until I heard the cries for help from concerned bystanders, and the sound of a sirens in the distance and lots and lots of pain.
It's funny what life brings to you even if it is life... death... or even a little bit of both.
**********
(1-hour earlier)
"Kendra!" my best friend Damecia, yells from the other side of my bedroom door, I cover my head with my pillow trying to ignore her bothersome rants. She bangs on it a few more times, before slamming it open with a loud bang. "Your fucking late bitch get the fuck up!"
I turn over, pulling the covers over my head to block her and the annoying sun streaming through my window. "What do you mean I'm late?" I groan wishing she'd leave me fuck alone. Today was Saturday for God's sake. Why wouldn't she let me be me? "Today's Saturday, I have no school or work today."
I heard Demecia shuffle around my room, then I felt the covers yanked off me. What the Hell?! Now I was really pissed. She had the audacity to wake me up. I was in the middle of a good dream. I was just about to get stepped on by Joseph Morgan.
"What the hell, Demecia?! What was that for?!" I said, angrily sitting up in bed shivering from the lack of warmth.
"Your late, Kendra. School started fifteen minutes ago." she shakes her head at me. A look of disappointment plastered on her face.
"What do you mean started fifteen minutes ago," my heart hammers in chest. Panick coursing through me. I couldn't be late. Being late would break the deal my parents and I had.
Before I moved to, Sang City. My parents wanted me to go to college somewhere around, Texas, where we lived. I refused, telling them, I had to find my own way, and the only way I could do that was by living away from them. Like a few states and cities away from them.
We had made a deal. I get to class on time, my grades had to be no less than a B-, and I had to have a stable job, somewhere making my own income. Or they'd drag me back to Texas. And already on the first day, I'm already breaking promise number one.
Demecia gives me a small smile. "Exactly what I mean. Today isn't Saturday Kenny, Its Monday."
As soon as she said Monday, I knew I was fucked. Jumping out of bed I check the time on my phone. Its 8:50 a.m., twenty minutes have passed. I missed my first lecture. I know for sure I wasn't making that class in time.
I hurry toward the bathroom, in hopes for a quick shower. Once, finished, I brush my teeth, apply eyeliner to my eyes and lip gloss to my lips, then head toward my closet to get dressed. Since I was in a rush and didn't have time to pick out an actual outfit, I throw on my college t-shirt - Go Vampires! - some jeans, mixed match socks, and a pair of Converse.
Grabbing my book bag, phone, wallet, and student id, I'm headed out the door when, Demecia, shoves a bagel in my hands and a bottle of orange juice.
"Thanks, D," I said giving her a side hug. "I don't know what I'd to without you."
She laughs and hugs me back. "Nothing, absolutely nothing."
I couldn't deny that. If Demecia, left I'd be a sitting duck, pathetic I know. We'd been friends since kindergarten, well me kindergarten and Demecia first grade. She was a year older than me, but that didn't stop our friendship.
"I'll see you afternoon. Dinners on me." I said, headed out the door, taking a bit out of the bagel in the process. I sigh in delight, tasting the sweet strawberry cream cheese.
"I'm holding you to that, Kenny," D, calls a as the door shuts behind me.
I make my way down the apartment stairs, toward the bus stop. Sadly, I had to walk three miles to get there.
As I'm walking down the street, I nearly trip, looking down I realize my shoe is untied. Sighing I walk closer to where the sidewalk met the road, where no one was walking and bent down to tie my shoe.
Not long after I looped the bunny into the hole, I heard someone scream, and pain exploded throughout my body. Everything hurt, then a familiar fuzzy feeling tingles through me.
I knew I was dying, and so did everybody else around my broken body. Only thing is I know something they don't. This has happened to me three hundred and twenty five times.
Screams and shouts from panicked citizens, fill my ears, but I smile, closing my eyes. I let the darkness take over.
Here we go again.
