Prologue
I opened my eyes. What happened? My mind was a blur, so I couldn’t react instantly.
Where am I? I felt something soft against me, and I forced myself to sit up. It was only then I realized. Where am I? What is this place? A sudden wave of adrenaline washed over me. And the pang of alarm. Was I kidnapped? What is this? I swiftly turned my head side to side, acknowledging the things around me. I’m on a bed. There’s a security camera in the corner of the ceiling. I’m being watched. Somebody was watching me. Trying to calm my breathing, I headed out the door that was near my bed.

Once I headed out, I noticed something was strange about the door. My name was written: Asami Endo.
I cringed. Yep. I’m definitely being watched. Then I noticed my room was between two others. Others with different names on them. Seriously? What is this place? I began looking around again. It seemed like a hallway. I started to walk, but wasn’t sure where, there were two pathways, and the walls were gray and there were screens on the walls. What is this, a maze? I chose the path on my right, and there were two doors by the side. One labelled: Dining Hall, and the other one labelled: Supply Room. The pathway continued. Curiosity rose in me, and I decided to follow where the path was taking me. It was a big empty room. And just as I thought, more security cameras. But that wasn’t all. I found several students in the room. Were they also kidnapped? If so, who was it? Who kidnapped us, and why? It wasn’t like me to just assume things but I’ve never been in a situation like this before. Looking now, the students looked equally confused.
“Hey! Where’s the exit?!” I heard a female voice demand. It was from a girl with an eye patch and a pirate hat.
“H-How did we end up here?” Another student asked, though this time it was a girl with freckles and a bow and arrow.
“We’ve been kidnapped!” A guy cried.
Just then, an announcement occurred. “Good morning, students! Welcome to the maze of the Unknown. Your Headmaster will arrive shortly after this announcement. In the meantime, I will gladly explain what this place is about. The maze of the Unknown is an inhabited area, which I thought would be fantastic for a school trip! Here, you can eat as much food as you can, and explore the lovely places here. So get used to staying here since this is going to take a while. If you’re lucky, you might unlock new hallways here. Of course, that only applies if you do the following. Kill. Kill someone and it will not only help you find a new hallway, but an escape route to this area. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with this place. So please enjoy while you still can! By the way, the Pharmacy Lab and the Fitness room close at night time. I will see you very soon.” It was cut off.
It was silent for a long time.
Then someone finally broke in. “Ahahaha, what a joke,” it was the same guy who cried about being kidnapped. “That spooked me a little. I mean, it makes sense, it’s almost Halloween, right?”
“Shut up,” A red haired girl said. “This must be something serious.”
“Th-Then it was legit?”
“It’s nonsense!” Another guy bellowed.
“T-To kill each other…” The freckled girl began.
“Is a little extreme.” A quiet girl with orange to brown hair finished.
“I-I’m sure the Headmaster will explain this.” A tall buff guy said.
We waited. And waited. And waited.
Then, a half black, half white bear with a red eye appeared. “Hello students, I am your Headmaster, a.k.a the one who made the announcement, Monokuma!”
The panicked guy scoffed. “Don’t tell me your serious-”
“Even if you are the Headmaster,” The orange-haired girl started. “You were just exaggerating, right? About the killing?”
“Nah, I was pretty serious,” Monokuma said. “But let’s not dwell on that just yet. I was here to hand your student E-Handbooks.”
“Student E-Handbooks?” Another boy with brown hair asked.
“Yes,” Monokuma replied. “Student E-Handbooks access you to the washrooms, and have the rules listed in there so it's extremely helpful. Also, as a quick note: If you are willing to have accomplice for the murder, only the one who does the killing gets to escape. And, the maximum number of killings is two people.”
“H-Hey!” The loud guy called. “What are you saying? We suddenly got kidnapped by who knows who, and now we’re forced to kill each other?!”
“Well yeah,” Monokuma answered casually. “But don’t get rough with me or I will seriously punish you. I wouldn’t test it. You should never underestimate Monokuma.”
He scoffed. “Yeah right, I’ll rip you to shreds!”
Before he could say anything, Three adults arrived. I had no idea where they came from.
“Who are they?” I blurted out, taking a step back.
“Sorry for the sudden intrusion,” One of them said. It was a woman with a half shaved head and black locks with ruby red eyes. One of them was another girl with huge headphones and a large pink ponytail, and the other was a man with an orange braid, a green open sweater and brown cargo pants.
“But this ends now,” The black haired girl continued. “We’re getting you out of here.”
“Wh-What are you guys doing here?!” Monokuma cried.
“I knew it!” Hanako gasped. “They’re working together!”
“We’re not,” The guy called. “Trust us, we know what we’re doing. We’re members of the Future Foundation, and we’re going to stop this killing game.”
My mind was flooding with thoughts. What’s happening right now? Who do we trust? What are we supposed to do? Who are we supposed to side with?
The freckled girl held up her bow and arrow and aimed it at one of them. “Y-You guys are probably working together!”
“Don’t shoot!” The black haired woman ordered.
The freckled girl began to tremble. Her legs were shaking, and was struggling with her aim. By startleness I assumed, she let go of the string attached to the bow, and the arrow shot through the air.
“Hghhh!”
I gasped. The arrow pierced the orange haired guy’s stomach. Blood began to pour out.
“Kenji!” Isamu cried.
He tried to keep his stance, while the black haired girl held onto him.
“I’m sorry!” Hanako sobbed. “I didn’t mean to!”
I had the urge to run over to him, but something was keeping me glued in place.
“You guys are ruining everything!” Monokuma yelled. “Well, I suppose that’s not really an issue. You three can be participants again!”
“You can’t do that!” The black haired woman argued. “We can still get out of here and heal Kenji.”
He winced. “D-Don’t worry about-”
“I can save him.” Monokuma said, before getting cut off.
“Don’t touch him!” The headphones woman screamed.
I saw Kenji’s eyes closed.
Monokuma giggled. “If you leave him like that, he might actually die.”
The freckled girl gasped. “Did I kill him?”
“He will be fine,” The black haired woman said, holding up Kenji’s limp body. “Now we must hurry, we know very well what this place is. It's-!”
The world suddenly went black.
