Kentucky. 1988
Me and my two friends are driving along a dark dirt road. Its winding path ever thinning. Bradly who is driving turns around to face me and Jessica in the back. Badly is a handsome man with a strong jawline and mustache.
"You ladies are gonna love it. There's this big clearing in the woods. There's gonna be beer and music. And plenty of fun to be had" He says with a smile.
"I've been before idiot. You took me there" Jessica remarks. Jessica is a pretty redhead with slight freckles.
"Oh. What about you Beth? You ever done anything like this before?" Bradly asks.
"Umm no. I haven't" I giggle out of nervousness
"It'll be fine Beth don't worry. Parties are for having fun so loosen up a little" Jessica says as she puts a hand on my shoulder.
"I've never gotten drunk before though. I don't know what to expect"
Bradly slaps the steering wheel. "Being drunk is like being in a comfy bed but you're walking around. Man Its the best feeling. A warm soft fuzzy time that I do so like"
"Can you turn the radio on Brad? I'm tired of hearing your voice" Jessica says. Bradly switches the radio on and a man begins speaking.
"4 campers have been reported missing. Their last know location was in Sandwood-. at 7:34 in the morning their campsite was found by a dog walker. The tent was slashed open and there were signs of a struggle. Blood was found at the scene- CLICK
"Why'd you turn it off? I was listening to that Brad" Jessica protests.
"I don't wanna hear about that sort of stuff" Brad says.
That's not too far from where we are. I don't like the sound of this.
Brad turns around again. "You think those folk disappearing was to do with-
A deer runs in front of the car.
"Brad!" I shout.
He looks back in front of him but it is too late. The car smashes into the deer. It rolls over the top of the car leaving blood on the now cracked windshield. I feel the car begin to swerve out of control as Brad puts both hands on the wheel and begins to try and stabilise the car.
Me and Jessica are thrown around in the back from the swerving and our bodies collide.
The car then goes off the road and begins to go down a steep incline. The rough terrain makes the car rattle. Before the car abruptly stops and I am launched forward. But my seatbelt stops me.
"What kind of person turns around while driving!?!" Jessica shouts.
"I didn't see the deer!"
"Because you weren't looking at the ROAD!"
"Look yeah I messed up I'm sorry. You ok Beth?"
I nod.
"We should go look for help" Jessica says
"Yeah. Lets go" Brad opens the door and steps out. Me and Jessica do the same.
We notice a dirt trail and begin to walk along it.
Bradly cups his hands around his mouth "Hello! We need some help! There's been an accident! Hello hello hello helloooo!"
"Shut up Bradly" Jessica says quietly.
As we walk I begin to see the top of a house reveal itself.
"Look a house" I remark.
"Yeah maybe whoever is in there can help" Brad begins to walk towards the house faster.
As the house comes into full view I can see that it is quite large. Two stories and an attic. with a large round window. The house is isolated. Nothing surrounds it but the forest. The house looks to be in relative disrepair also. Paint peels from the wood. And multiple windows are broken.
"The house is abandoned" Jessica says. "This was a waste of time"
"Hold on Jessica." I say "Even if its abandoned its better than waiting out in the cold.
"Exactly" Brad says as he walks up the steps and tries the door. "Its locked"
"Maybe the backdoor is unlocked" I respond.
"Hold on" He says. He takes a step back before raising his leg up and kicking the door. The door flies open with the sound of wood snapping.
"Brad!" Jessica gasps.
"What? Its abandoned" He walks Inside and me and Jessica follow.
The house is a filthy mess. The smell of mould lingers in the air. The inside is dark and dust floats around. The floorboards feel brittle and squeak when being walked on.
"We should leave" I tell them. "This place is making me feel uneasy.
"What was that Beth?" Brad says as he begins to walk towards another room.
Just then a large man reveals himself from around a corner and stands right in front of Brad who has his head turned facing me. The man wears a white tank top and jeans. And a burlap sack over his head with two holes cut in it for eyes.
Before any of us have the chance to react the man raises a hammer and brings it down on Brads head. An awful sound can be heard as the hammer clacks against his skull. He falls down lifeless.
Jessica screams and turns around to run. The man leaps forward and tackles her. Bringing her to the ground with a thud.
As they struggle on the ground I turn around and run towards the front door to try and escape. As I pass through the doorway I feel a sudden pain in my leg. Followed by a metallic clamping sound. I am unable to move the leg and fall forward. Landing on my stomach.
I attempt to get back to my feet while crawling forward but I am stuck in place. I turn around and see that my leg has been caught in a beartrap.
"HELP! HELP ME!" I scream out the open door while struggling. My eyes become wet with tears as the pain begins to set into my leg.
I hear footsteps behind me. I turn around and see the large man walking towards me. Behind him lays Jessica's lifeless body.
I scream at the top of my lungs as he stands over me. His muscular hairy arms clutch the bloody hammer tightly. His fat gut visible under his blood covered tank top. A fowl odour comes from his body. The smell of rot and decay. He looks at me with his piercing eyes as I lay there shivering. Unable to move from fear. He then raises his leg. Revealing the bottom of his boot to my vision. Before driving his foot into my face.
Everything goes dark.

I come to in a strange dark room. My feet aren't touching the ground. I look up to see my hands bound together with rope. And hanging from a meat hook. I try to scream but let out only a muffle. As the tape over my mouth wont allow me to yell. I look to my right and see Jessica in the same position. Her mascara runs down her face from her crying.
Please no. I don't want to die.
I hear a door open. Followed by loud footsteps. Me and Jessica see our attacker walk down some stairs.
Me and Jessica begin to try and yell out of fear. And start struggling against the ropes.
The man lifts the burlap sack up. Stopping just under his nose. Revealing his mouth full of rotten yellow teeth. He pulls out a stick of lipstick and applies it to his lips before making a POP sound with his lips. He smiles and put the sack back over his mouth.
That's Jessica's lipstick.

The man smiles then walks to a table. There's a small knife and a chainsaw on it. He grabs the chainsaw. Me and Jessica let out muffled screams as he pulls the cord to start it. After the third attempt the chainsaw roars to life. Drowning out our cries. He revs the chainsaw in Jessica's face before positioning it at her left hip. He then begins to pass it through her body. Blood sprays everywhere. It goes all over the walls, the man, and it splatters against my face. I close my eyes as tight as I can before fainting. When I wake up I can see that he is about half way through her body. Tears stream down my face as I watch him cut through my friend. Finally he gets through to the other side. And her lower half falls to the ground with a thud. Leaving only her dead upper body hanging there with her rolled back lifeless eyes. and unhinged jaw. Barely held in place by the tape.
The man turns his attention towards me. He walks towards me while revving the chainsaw. I begin to hyperventilate as he positions in next to my hip.
Then the chainsaw starts stalling before stopping all together.
The man becomes enraged at this and throws it at the wall while screaming bloody murder.
Then he grabs Jessica's lower body and walks back up the stairs.
The blood that splattered on my face and body begins to solidify against my skin.
I need to get out of here.
I look up at my restraints. The ropes are too strong to break on my own. But maybe I don't need to.
I focus all my remaining strength and energy on pulling myself up against the meat hook before quickly extending my arms up and forward to unhook myself. I fall a good few feet and land on my side.
Ow!
I stand up and grab the tape covering my mouth and rip it off. I take a deep breath.
Before falling to my knees and vomiting all over the floor due to all the stress and blood. When I think its over a second stream floods out of my mouth. My eyes are wet with tears and my mouth stings from the acidity of the vomit.
I need to get these ropes off
I get back on my feet and walk over to the table with the knife on it. The knife is rusty and small but it might be able to get me out of these restraints.
I grab the knife and position the blade against the ropes and begin sawing. After a while I see the rope begin to fray before.
SNAP
I pull my hands away from each other.
I look around the dark room one last time. The walls and floor are covered in blood. Jessica's torso continues to dribble blood.
I'm sorry Jessica
I turn my attention towards the stairs leading out of the room. The steps are concrete so creaking shouldn't be an issue.
I begin to slowly walk up the stairs holding the knife in front of me with two hands.
I finally reach the top of the steps and reach a door. Opening it reveals a hallway. I turn left and see the door Brad kicked down to get in here. Now boarded up with wood and nails.
Oh no
Turning right I see the entrance to the room where the man first revealed himself.
Walking towards the room I see that it is a kitchen. And a disgusting one at that. Body parts lay scattered all over the countertops. Arms, legs, heads, torsos. And even organs. On the stove a pot of water boils. Hanging out of the pot is a woman's leg.
I gag at the sight of it and turn around. I notice that the kitchen leads to another room on the right.
As I approach this doorway I begin to hear something. The room looks to be a living room. Sat on a recliner armchair facing away from me is the man. He watches TV while loudly chewing on something.
I don't want to think about what that is.
Strangely enough the TV plays a gameshow. Something oddly normal.
"So Frank. Which of these four fruits has acid so powerful, that it can digest the inside of your mouth? Is it A. Cherries. B. Oranges. C Pinea-"
I walk back to the kitchen then back to the hallway.
I turn my attention to the stairs.

I begin to walk up the stairs as quietly and carefully as I can. I cringe at the sound every time I hear a step creak. I reach the top of the stairs and look around. There's three doors. All but one is heavily barricaded. I look up and see the outline of the attic hatch. With a finger hole that I would be able to use to open if I was a foot taller.
Despite already knowing I'm not tall enough I get on the tips of my toes and reach for it.

The smell of rot floods my nostrils as I take in the sight of the room.
"Brad" I say under my voice as I see him lying on a large dining table.
I walk over to him. His face badly bruised and cut. And his hands have been nailed to the table he opens his only eye that isn't swollen shut.
"Beth?" He says with a slightly muffled voice
"Yes Brad I'm here"
"Where's Jessica"
I fall silent.
"I'm sorry I got us into this Beth. It was me. This whole thing could have been avoided. I wasn't paying attention to the road-
"Don't worry. I'm going to get you out of here

I grab one of the nails and pull against it. Trying to uproot it from his hand. Brad groans in pain.

I hear the sound of someone coming up the stairs. I look around panicked.

"There's a dresser right there you can hide in" Brad says out of breath
I notice the large dresser and quickly speed walk towards it and get inside just as the door to the room I'm in swings open.
I look through a slight gap between the two dresser doors and see the man walk up to Brad. He places his hammer down next to him. It is then that I notice the hacksaw in the mans hand.
"Listen man. Don't do anything stupid. Its not too late to do the right thing" Brad pleads.
The man grabs Brads hair and puts the teeth of the saw against his neck and begins to saw through his neck.
"STOP! AHHH!!! ARGHHH! AKCHH! GAHH!" Gargle
Blood begins to flow out of Brads mouth.
I look away and notice a rifle next to me in the dresser. Next to it is a small green box.
I grab the rifle and awkwardly try to pull the bolt back in the cramped dresser. Its empty.
I crouch down and rummage inside the box. Inside is one bullet.
I grab the bullet and begin to try and load it into the rifle. The bullet slips out of my hand and falls at my feet. Making a loud noise. I hear the sawing stop.
No!
I grab the bullet and jam it into the rifle before pushing the bolt forward and down. Just then the man swings the doors to the dresser open.
I raise the rifle at him and fire.
As I do the man grabs the side of the dresser and pushes it. Making it fall on its side.
I roll out and quickly get to my feet. I see the man with a wound on his shoulder. Blood soaks his shirt.
The man charges me with his hammer raised. As he swings it down at my head I duck and run under his shoulder. I quickly turn around and slash my knife across his back.
He yells in pain and spins around to face me again.
I rush towards him and attempt to stab him in the chest. He grabs my wrist and raised his hammer once more.
I drop the knife. It falls and I catch it in my free hand before ramming it into his stomach.
The man screams and hits me across the face with his hammer.
I fall to the ground with my knife still in hand. I look at the man who visibly winces in pain. One hand against his stomach wound. The other still clutching the hammer.
I look past him and see the toppled dresser. Then to the side of it I see a small hole at the bottom of the wall where the dresser originally was.
Its big enough for me to fit through.
I force myself to get up and run towards the hole. Diving for it I begin to crawl through it and into the frame and insulation of the house.
I feel the man grab my ankle before experiencing agonising pain as he hits my foot with his hammer. Breaking it in the process.
I try to wriggle free but the effort is futile. He drags me out of the hole and gets on top of me. He begins to choke me with one hand as he raises his hammer for one final killing blow to the head.
Clutching my knife I bring it forward and jam it into his eye.
He screams and falls back. Taking my knife with him.
With this new distraction I crawl back into the hole.
I get to my feet and begin limping along the inside of the wall. Cobwebs get stuck in my face as I do.
What do I do? How do I get out of here?
I look up and see that there's a small gap I could climb through to reach the attic.
I grab onto parts of the wooden framing and pull myself up. As I climb I find a foothold and rest there. I continue climbing. Slowly. As I do this I hear the man screaming and smashing up the house.
I finally reach the top. I look behind me at the old wood. I can see the attic through a gap.
I slam my elbow into the rotted wood making a hole. I elbow the wood again and again making the hole bigger. Then I begin kicking the wood with my only unbroken foot. Eventually the hole becomes big enough for me to fit through.
I jump from where I am holding myself up and through the hole. Landing on my broken foot I fall to the ground.
I use all the strength I have to push myself off the ground. I look at the round glass window. Its unbarricaded.
I'm pretty high up. How am I supposed to get down?
I hear something behind me. Turning around I see the attic hatch fall open. Frozen in fear I watch as the man climbs up the ladder and into the attic. He screams at me while pointing his hammer in my direction. Blood soaks the burlap sack and shirt he is wearing. He runs towards me.
I limp as fast as I can towards the window and throw myself into it. The window shatters and I go through it. I fall all the way down to the ground with a hard thud. The air is knocked out of my lungs and I feel blood pouring from my arms and forehead from the glass.
I get up and begin limping towards the woods. As I do I hear the man screaming in the distance. Then I see light all around me. I turn around and see the unmistakable glow of a flashlight. He's still after me.
I begin to limp faster as I reach the treeline. I push myself past multiple thick trees and try to conceal myself behind them as I flee. But the glow of the flashlight does not dim.
My foot gets caught on a root. I fall to the ground. Looking up I see another light. two of them. Headlights.
I get up and run in front of the car.
"HELP ME! OH PLEASE YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!" I scream while waving my arms. The car comes to a stop and two men get out.
"What happened? Lady you look real hurt" One of them says.
"Ahh... He killed my friends. Please help"
"Uhh? Ok get in the car"
One of the men guides me into the back of the car. They get in and begin to drive.
I let out a deep breath and begin to cry. Finally letting it all out.
I turn around and look out the back window. The man stands in the path. Holding his flashlight and hammer. My mouth drops and I begin to tremble.

23 years later
I wait in line at the supermarket while talking to my husband on my smartphone.
"And don't forget Alan needs a haircut"
"I'm on it" Anyway I gotta go. Love you.
"Love you too" I hang up the call
As I put my phone in my pocket and walk forward I bump into someone.
"Oh sorry that was all me haha-"
The very tall man looks down at me. His shirt is dirty and has brown stains on it. His hair is white and he has a bushy white beard. The man has a patch covering one of his eyes.
No. Its not.
The man smiles at me with a big yellow toothy grin. The exact same smile from all those years ago. Down to the shape of the teeth. Its unmistakable.
I stand there shaking with fear. My eyes begin to water. Then he just walks past me.
I look at him as he walks away. He's just walking. Shopping bag in hand. Out the exit.
A free man.
