Hello everyone, I’m Remy Flynn. Thank you all for reading *Beneath the Rust*.
This book originally began as an ancient-Chinese supernatural tale I wrote many years ago. Because my writing style wasn’t mature back then, I’d always wanted to rewrite it, but I struggled to find inspiration. That is, until I happened to hear a retro-style Russian playlist one day. It instantly captured my attention, and on a whim, I re-set the story in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, drastically rewriting both the title and the content.
Although I wasn’t born when the Soviet Union collapsed and couldn’t witness this historic event firsthand, it actually left plenty of room for imagination and interpretation: What were the thoughts of individuals with different backgrounds and stances at the time? Where did those caught in the midst of it all end up?
Thus, I gradually sketched out a desolate island and rusted steel structures, bringing to life Filaret, whose faith crumbled; Ilya, who wove a cocoon around himself; Anton, shrewd and resourceful; the indifferent, mercenary fishermen; and Worker-01—the faithful old dog, Vera—who remained gentle even in the midst of suffering… And all of this came to a close on the eve of the regime’s collapse, with all the grudges and entanglements dissolving into an absurd fireworks display, vanishing in an instant.
Wrapped in the guise of a sci-fi thriller, this story may not be realistic enough to serve as a microcosm of that era, but I hope the plot twists at least provide an exhilarating read, and that the clash between the spirit of the times and human nature offers moments worth savoring.
Amid the corrosion of the times, may we all hold fast to our humanity and remain true to ourselves.
