The sad fate of little children is that they can be attached to their parents no matter how that relationship works out. Can you imagine raising your hand to pat a child on the head in a completely neutral setting, only to have the child recoil in defense as if expecting a blow? On observation, the child reacts like that to nearby females who raise their hands. One can make a negative assumption about their home setting.
