Warning: Death, mild gore
I barely dogged the blade above my head, leaping over debris and rocks. I had to find Ven, I had to know if he was safe. An enemy warrior fell to my right, one of our own standing above triumphantly, only to be shot with a poison arrow.
The entrance to the Crystal Caverns was already blocked, crowded by the heat of the battle. I looked up at the amethyst purple sky to see a similar scene, only warriors replaced by spacecrafts.
I was beyond exhausted. Beyond worn out. I had messily bandaged my shin, the only part that my now dirty ammor didn’t cover. Ven, there he was, fighting an enemy warrior. The beast roared, flinging it’s dark maroon arms at my colleague. The enemy had size on us, I’d give them that. I rushed to Ven’s side and gave him a nod.
We finished off the warrior, it’s body making a repulsive “thud” as it hit the dusty ground.
“Glad you could join me Dey.” Ven smiled, looking as beaten down as I felt. We both moved, further away from the battle, and stood behind a few large rocks.
”So am I. Do you still have it?”
He slung his backpack around and pulled out the little stone.
”Wow, never thought I’d see it in person.”
”Me neither.” He said, tilting it to shine in the sun. “We have to get it out of here, before one of the Rheex notices it’s gone.”
“I was able to contact Cray, he can pick us up and take us back to base.”
”Perfect, now we just have to…
He was cut off by a Rheex warrior reaching around the rock and picking him up like he weighed nothing.
“VEN!” I screamed, lunging at the large creature as it squeezed the life out of my friend. Ven dropped, motionless and pale, while my shock made my adrenaline spike. I jumped up, flinging my blade at the beasts face, then raking it down it’s spine. Landing perfectly, the Rheex fell with one final gurgling growl.
I stood, hands shaking and eyes blazing, ready for more. Then I remembered the gem, Cray had to be coming soon. Not soon enough.
I walked over to Ven lifeless figure, and pried the leather bag from his hands with tears rolling down my ashen face.
I barely heard the roar of Cray’s Skyship as it landed a few hundred feet from me.
“Dey! We gotta go!”
It wasn’t fair. Ven was a brilliant fighter, an incredible person, and he died just like that. My hands clenched, my lungs burned, I let out a scream and fell to my knees. My head spun with anger and fear, but I had to get up. I had to get the gem to Corleya, we could still win. I ran to the ship, looking behind me to see a group of Rheex coming our way.
“Get in!” Cray grabbed my hand and pulled me to safety. I watched Ven’s form disappear into the smoke as we rose higher and higher.
We could still win, I could make Ven’s death worth something. He will not die in vain.
