poems - a thunderous empty, once

Lightning splits the sky

in two -

It cuts through cloud

and air alike.

Thunder follows, his footfall echoes,

As he thuds invisibly.

An empty hall.

Empty, but for one boy.

An empty heart.

Empty, no love to fill it,

for he is alone,

and the thunder scares him.

Surely, the lightning would too,

if only he was tall enough to see it through the windows.

Rain lashes against the walls of his refuge,

the weather throws itself against the roof -

tiles fall.

Fear.

It pollutes his mind, it takes him hostage -

what will happen to him?

A child, all alone?

Still, the rain, the wind, the anger, the lightning,

attacks the hall he sits in, his shadow flickers.

The heavy doors strain to keep out this weather,

they fight for him, when no-one else will -

they collapse in.

Once,

a soldier stood, his heart cast in gold.

Once a mission was told to him,

It was as good as done, for he was a fine man.

The soldier rode for king and for country,

but mostly for the prince of his heart

who awaited him at the end of each tiring day.

Once, a villager came screaming,

came shouting, came telling a horrific tale

of a horrific beast.

Our soldier set out at once.

He rode through wood, through tunnel, through bramble,

until he reached the cave

of the beast he must slay

to be accepted back into his kingdom.

Once, he raised his sword.

Twice, he fumbled.

Three times, he asked himself, 'Is this necessary?',

yet twice he told himself that it was.

Once upon a time,

our soldier was send to kill a beast,

who was not a beast after all, but a gentle creature.

If he had brought it's head, he would have bathed in riches,

but gold is not necessary

when you have gold in your heart, your head, and your soul.
