The dark didn’t concern me as much, as I’ve gotten used to it. What has been bothering me is that my stance was starting to get sluggish. This isn’t a good sign. It has been at least three days or so in this forest, and there’s no caffeine in sight.I could leave, but that would be cowardice. Besides, I’d probably get caught. Especially with these jelly-like legs.
“We don’t have to make a hideout here,” Mira’s voice interrupted my thoughts. “We’re going to take a short break and keep going. It would be bad if we stayed here for too long.”
“You can say that again.” Vera agreed.
Anita gripped onto her shoulders, body trembling. “It’s cold though.”
Mira glanced around. “There’s not many branches for firewood.”
“Ace, mind finding some branches for firewood?” Vera asked.
“Me?” I asked, pointing at my chest. “Fine.” I turned my heel and walked away.

As I was searching for bulky branches, thoughts revolved around my head again.
I never did favors for anyone before. But if it’s a mandatory factor for us to work together, I didn’t have much of a choice. Although it does make me want to gag. I thought back to when I proposed the deal. They actually accepted it. From someone like me. Someone they didn’t know. Someone they shouldn’t know. I finally found some branches and scooped them up in my arms. People say you could never run away from your past. I have been. At least, mentally. I didn’t want to think of that night. That night I did something terrible. My body jerked. I really need caffeine. I was about to head back when I saw an aspect of light peek through the trees. The sun must be setting. I was surprised I could see it from here. This could probably make things a bit brighter. I should head back. I turned around. Dropped the branches. My eyes shot wide in horror. Cold sweat running down my face. There was a body on the ground right in front of me. Head slightly turned away but I could the face. It was a young woman with a huge slice across her stomach. Clothes and face were stained with blood. Black shoulder length hair. Brown eyes that the eyelids closed halfway. The resemblance was so clear. My mother’s dead body flashed through my mind. Same hair color, and nearly the same face. My chest was pounding. Ears ringing. I couldn’t say anything. My throat closed up. So this was why…the forest had caution tape… Another light shot by, nearly blinding me. I shield my eyes for just a second. My head turned slowly to it. A security guard. From the council. Was staring at me from afar. In front of the dead body.
