"I need a drink." I say to Triniti. The memories of that girl I met today come flooding back as we arrive at an empty bar on the upper-east side of town. She flashes me a look of concern.
Triniti and I had just met that day, at our college orientation, and soon after found out that we would be roommates. I was new this year at Harthwood, starting my Junior year, a transfer from Northwestern. No, not the Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, located in Hugo Oklahoma, population of roughly five-thousand. I decided I needed a change. I hadn't used my scholarship money that I earned in high school, and had no us for it, since Northwestern was so cheap for local students. My "change" involved a move to New York City, more paperwork than I ever dreamed, and some help from a few wealthy relatives,
"Okay, but I'm warning you, this is less of a bar and more of a...charming speak-easy." Triniti says, trying to lower my expectations and protect herself from possible judgment she could face.
"What the hell does that mean?" I say as a small smile spreads on my lips.
We walk inside and I suddenly know exactly what she meant. It was, indeed, charming. An old-fashioned bar faces us as we walk in, with glass shelves and a depressing-lack of liquor sitting upon them. There is one gentleman sitting at the bar, I'd say early thirties, with his back turned to us, looking towards me from the corner of his eye.
Triniti and I sit down on the red leather booths, across from the bar, worn from others sitting before us. There's a small glass table in front of us.
Triniti fills me in on the latest gossip at the school. Who's popular, who's not, what people think of me, how I 'could seduce any man, or woman, at our school with my slow, southern drawl' (her words, not mine). I let out a chuckle.
A Jukebox plays in the corner of the room. The song 'Handsome Man' by Barbra Pittman plays. "C'mon, Addison, let's dance!" Triniti says, excitedly hopping up from her seat, extending a hand towards me with a smile.
"Alright, alright. Just let me get a drink before I embarrass myself in front of you and the one other person in the bar." I say, looking towards him. Our eyes meet. As I'm about to flag the only waiter over, he comes already towards me, with a fruity drink in his hand. Without a word, the waiter sets the drink on our table and disappears behind the bar. I look at it and can only assume who sent this.
