明熹宗天啟四年，東林黨領袖左光斗等人被捕入獄。以提督東廠魏忠賢為首的閹黨群臣密集佈署，打算一舉殲滅東林黨人。保定巡府衙門總捕頭鄭恆舟在調查命案過程遭到錦衣衛阻擾，進而牽連進一場武林人士暗中保護東林黨人的行動。為了躲避東廠追捕，同時也為了完成保定巡府大人委託之事，鄭恆舟棄職潛逃，保護左光斗的得意門生史可法趕赴蘇州東林書院，伺機取回足以牽連無數武林人士的保黨名冊……
