“Mom!” Lily called as she ran down the dark streets. “Mommy!” The bottoms of her feet started bleeding. As she stepped on broken glass the homeless left behind, but she couldn’t feel the pain of her slashed feet. “Mommy, help! The twins! The TWINS!”
Tears burned her eyes as they scorched down her cheeks. “Mommy!” she cried. “MOMMY! PLEASE!” She ran down alley after alley. Where were they? Where were her parents? “DADDY! MOMMY!”
Lily ran down the alley where a bunch of trash cans lay. She saw a figure laying on the ground. “Mommy!” she said in relief. She ran down the alley to the figure and started slowing down when she saw a dark liquid surrounding the woman’s body. It was a dark crimson red, and she could start smelling a potent copper. “Mom?”
The figure breathed shallowly, her chest rising and falling from pain and agony.
“Mommy! No! NO!”
Lily ran to the figure, kneeling down beside her mother. “What? What happened to you? I— I don’t understand! What’s going on?”
Jules placed her hand on Lily’s that was getting stained a dark red with her blood. “Lily....” Her voice was strained. “Run, baby. Get out of here....”
“No! But you’re bleeding!” Lily took her hand away from her mother’s and trembled as she tried to find where Jules was bleeding. That’s when she saw it. A knife... In Jules’ stomach. Her little hands shook as she touched the knife with her finger. “Mommy...” she whispered in horror.
“Leave me,” Jules gasped, trying to dull the pain that surrounded her entire body. “Leave here....” She tucked a strand of hair behind Lily’s ear, hoping she could calm her. “You remember aunt Melody, right...?”
“No...” Lily sobbed. “No... I can’t leave you....”
“Her house is only a couple miles from here...” Jules continued, trying to get the visible pain out of her voice. “I have a book of bus passes in my purse....” She pointed to a blue bag on the ground. “I want you to walk through the busy streets so you can’t be hurt... Take the ten o’clock bus route 360... You’re aunt’s house is around the block after the second stop....”
“Mommy... I can’t.…” Lily gasped for air, fighting the sobs that threatened to escape her mouth. “Please... I already lost the twins... I can’t lose you too... I don’t want to lose daddy either....” Then she gasped. “Wait! Where’s daddy? Is he hurt too?”
Jules’ eyes hardened for a moment. Her gaze was full of betrayal, but Lily didn’t know why she felt betrayed. “Lily... Honey... You’re daddy’s gone...” she said. “He’s gone....” She placed her hand on her daughter’s that was on her stomach, right next to the knife. “I need you to go now...” she whispered softly. “I need you to go find your aunt... Okay...?”
“But... what about you?” Lily asked quietly, tears blurring her vision.
“I’ll be gone, too...” Jules said back. “No one can help me....”
“No!” Lily screamed. “Mommy! You can’t leave me! You CAN’T!”
“Go...” Jules whispered. “I can’t risk you getting captured... Go, Lily....”
“No... I— I can’t....”
“LILLIAN GO!” Jules yelled, her voice hoarse.
Lily flinched at her mother’s scream. She hated it when Jules got angry. Especially when she felt she was angry at her. Her heart throbbed as she stood, running over to her mother’s purse and pulled out a bus ticket.
“Bus 360...” Jules explained. “Leaves at ten... Second stop....”
Lily nodded, fighting the urge to cry.
“Go now...” Jules said. “And remember... I will always love you... Even if I’m not there....”
Then Lily ran out of the alley, sobbing as she got onto the busy streets. 63Please respect copyright.PENANAC7x9XmJhQ8
