老舊的醫院裡瀰漫著一種難以言語的惡臭，這裡已經沒有再被使用，而是收留著一個可憐被綁在病床上的瘋子，梅倫岱爾。他很知名，全世界的人都知道他，一個知名的作家，一個在一夜間背負三十條殺人罪名的瘋狂罪犯，一個講瘋話的瘋子，還有許多。但這都只是外界的猜想罷了，沒有人知道在梅倫身上到底發生過什麼，是怎樣的經歷，會使他突然變成知名作家，卻又在一夜間轉念開始殺人。
