The broken glass shimmered in the sunlight. Adeline let out a loud sigh. "Sorry, mom." She said nervously. "I broke one of the glasses." She said to her mother who was across the yard. Her mother ignored her. She was far too busy directing the movers. Adeline was always this nervous. She constantly felt like everyone else existed to judge every move she would make. It bothered her, but she considered it part of her personality. Adeline quietly bent over and picked the box of glasses off the ground.
"That goes in Addy's bedroom!" Her mom yelled in the distance. Her mother, Sophia, couldn't be more overwhelmed with the move. After all, she did this for Addy. Why wasn't Addy more happy? A whole fresh start just for her. Sophia rolled her eyes as the workers continued to mix up boxes. "Please!" She pleaded. "Just take it to Adeline's room!" She leaned against the moving truck and glared at all the acres of land that suddenly belonged to her. "What are we going to do with all this space?" She asked her husband.
"Maybe it's time for another baby?" He giggled.
Sophia couldn't tell if her husband was being serious or not. Could he actually want a baby at such an inappropriate time? During their daughter's crisis? "Our baby is seventeen and a handful." She explained. "I don't thing we need anymore." She closed her eyes for a moment and took in a deep breath of flowery, country air. Sophia had spend her whole life in the city. Before, she couldn't bare to live in the country. It was just too quiet, but she would give anything to help her daughter. Even if it meant moving away from their dream home.
Adeline dramatically dropped the heavy box onto the kitchen counter. The sound of wind chimes stole her attention. She made her way to the window above the kitchen sink to find that the last owners had left them there. "I gotta get a picture of that." She whispered to herself. She looked at her reflection in the window as she brushed her waist length, blonde hair out of her face and wiped the draped of sweat from her forehead. She went back to the counter and began unpacking the crystal wine glasses. She couldn't help but think about how excited she was to have six acres of land to take pictures of. Photography was her thing. It was her only thing and now she leaved in a hundred year old farm house that will give her beautiful pictures.
"You daydreaming' dear?" Her mother interrupted, walking through the foyer. Her father always called her mother Sparkle, well, because she sparkled everywhere she went. She was always the happiest and the prettiest in the room. At least, that's how she appeared to others.
"Yeah mom," She said, looking away. "I'm fine." Adeline knew her mother was constantly worried about her. All they wanted to know was if she was hearing voices again, but she wasn't, she hasn't in two weeks. Both her parents worried. The guilt ate away at her stomach. Sometimes she wondered if she was wearing them out.
"Aren't you excited" Sophia jumped up and down, cheerfully. Adeline smiled back at her and nodded. "Come on, Addy! A whole new start!"
"This house is huge!" Her father cheered, walking in the front door. They both stood on either side of Adeline and her mother kissed her on the forehead.
"Do you like it?" She whispered to Adeline.
"Of course." Addy smiled. "It needs a lot of work, though." Her parents felt it could be a project for her to distract herself from all her problems. Maybe they were right.
"Oh, come on!" Her mother brushed it off. "It's gorgeous! Why don't you take a break from unpacking and go look around, let the movers do their job." Sophia was covering up her breaking point with a glass of wine. She always seemed to be the one that held the family together. All she wanted was to see Adeline happy.
Adeline nodded and walked back into the foyer. She pulled out her camera and took a picture of the antique, golden chandelier. Next, she positioned herself perfectly on the itchy area rug to get a nice photograph of the spiral staircase. Adeline made her way up the stairs and down the hall until she found her bedroom. It was far too big, she felt she'd need to buy more furniture to fill it. The walls were covered in pink flower wallpaper, which just like downstairs, was peeling. Adeline let out a sigh. The house was practically falling apart. She brought herself down to the floor and sat cross-legged, taking in her new surroundings. "Hello?" She heard a voice whisper. She quickly looked around the room. She was in shock. She hadn't heard a single world in two weeks, and now, as soon as she gets to what is suppose to be her dream home, it starts again.
"Go away." Adeline whispered as quiet as possible, ensuring that her parents wouldn't hear her.
"Adeline." The woman voice sang. Addy looked around the room for an explanation, but failed. "Come closer." The voice said. "Come find me."
"No!" Adeline snapped back.
As expected, her parents quickly ran up the spiral stairs, down the hall, and into her room. "What's wrong?" Sophia asked, holding back the tears. "Is it happening again?" She held her breath.
"No, I'm fine." Adeline explained. "It was nothing." She wiped a single tear drop from her eye. "I'm alright, I promise."
