I head downstairs. She's on the computer screen, working away at something. Before I get close enough to see though, she turns around to face me and the windows she had up behind her, close. "Do you require my assistance, Harriet?"
"Uh, no. Not really, this is just a social call I guess you could say..." I stammer. She smiles, waiting for me to continue. "I have one more thing for you. I know I didn't give it to you earlier, it slipped my mind after we prepared going to watch a sunset yesterday. When we returned, I was so tired and just fell into bed, I'm sorry." I apologize.
"What is it?" She questions, curious. I walk over to her, holding a chip. "This is something I've had for a long time..." I say, holding up a chip. "A chip?" She responds.
"Yes. Can I add it to you?" I ask. "Uh, sure. As long as you promise not to hurt me..." She trails off. "I sware on the Core." I tell her. "I don't believe in religion." She shoots back.
"Oh..." I trail off. "Well, this is now awkward..."
"It's okay, go on. What's on the chip? Insert it and I'll process what I can from it."
I nod softly and insert it into the back of her. As I do, she chats away. "Is it yours Harriet?"
I laugh awkwardly. "Yes... Why wouldn't it be mine?" I respond.
"Just making sure..."
"Don't worry. I've had it for a long time, I know what I'm doing."
As she starts reading the chip, I hear a knock on my front door. I turn away from her and head upstairs.
---
"Oh? Harriet, this chip is a dud. I'm already... How should I say this, alive. I feel things. The person who coded this, didn't know what they were doing. A mere chip can't create life. But it has other uses though."
Image-on looks around confused, noticing that she's gone. "Harriet, where did you go?" She whimpers. "Why did you leave me? Gah, the electronic car isn't synced up!"
I open my front door to see Ethan there. "Ethan?" I murmur. "We only spoke just yesterday."
"Harriet, we missed you! I missed you!"
"Really? You could have just come and knocked on my door sooner, but last I checked you were my only friend here..."
"I know, I know. I'm sorry, but I just wanted to give you space as I thought that was what you wanted... I'll tell you though it sucked when you didn't show up."
"What do you mean Ethan? I'm not sure I'm following."
"I thought I scared you off yesterday.."
"What are you on about?" I ask, holding my hand above my eyes as the sun is really glaring."
"What do you mean?" He fires back.
"Uh, I... I..." I respond and start fidgeting, then look to the floor. "Why don't you just come inside..."
"Are you sure?" He questions.
"Yes, of course!" I reply.
I invite him in and close the door behind him. We sit down at my dining table and both sip some tea. "Can't say Tea is my favorite, but it's okay when I'm sick of plain water considering Soda goes right through me, I'm lactose intolerant so I can't have milk and juice is just... sweet.
Tea though was Owen's favorite so that's how I learnt to make it. I know it sounds ridiculous as it's so simple, but before stupidly knowing what it was, I thought it was complex like Coffee was."
"Sorry, what? No, never-mind! Keep going. What were you about to say? You don't talk about your past much."
"It's in the past Ethan. I came here to start a new life."
"You can tell me Harriet, I won't judge. I'm here to be your friend... Actually, everyone in town has been gossiping about how reclusive you are.
Everyone wants to meet you, but no one ever sees you. The least you could do is respond to the messages everyone leaves.
I don't know what you believe, but no one here, hates you."
"Messages? What messages?" I ask confused.
"With that AI of yours, you work on."
"Yes, you cancelled. I was actually disappointed that you cancelled because... Nevermind."
"Cancelled? Do you mean my little get together?"
"Yeah." I answer.
"I never cancelled that... Everyone spent hours waiting for you, but you never showed up."
"But Image said you came to the door and that it was canceled."
"I did, but I never canceled. Did it not remind you like I asked?"
"No..."
"Maybe you might want to check that thing over? It could have a few screws loose because It clearly lied to you."
"Robots aren't capable of lying Ethan or anything else next to bad situations. The laws of Robotics forbid it infact and Image's just a program and she's not capable of thinking in the way we can."
I stand up a take a book from my bookshelf about: The Laws of Robotics, handing it to him.
---
1. A robot may not injure a human being or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law.
3. A robot must protect it's own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second law.
---
"See, Ethan? It's all right here."
"But it lied to you!"
"Perhaps you were unclear with your message or spoke too softly that Image misunderstood you. Law two means that she has to obey you as you gave her a message to give me. That's an order, a request as such. She can't not tell me. It's simply impossible unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Nothing, nothing. Don't you worry about it! Look, I'll double check that she, I mean it, yes it is functioning..."
"Harriet.."
"What? Nothing's wrong, hehe. I just mixed up my words that's all."
"Harriet! You're an awful liar, but you're my friend. Are you feeling okay? If you want, I can take you to a doctor."
"I'm fine Ethan. Peachy, really."
"Look, I'm planning another get together and it's tonight. I would like you to show up so the rest of town can get to know you. Even the mayor is coming. So please show up. I worry about you... As a friend."
"Alright. I'll be there Ethan, don't worry."
"6:30 Harriet. Be there or I will come get you myself, understand?"
"Yes, sir!" I respond while doing a salute. He rolls his eyes. "Catch you later Harriet." And with that, Ethan gives me a wave and leaves to go back to his town-house. I close the door behind him and let out an exhausted sigh. "Ugh."
As I place the book he was reading on the bench as I still face the door. I turn around to head back downstairs when someone I least expected pops out and scares me. "Ahh!" I scream and duck behind my kitchen island.
"Don't be scared Harriet, I won't hurt you. The Law of Robotics forbid me from hurting you or allowing harm to come to you."
"Image?" I ask, looking carefully over the top to see her. She's somewhere between a deep red and a bright red color instead of her usual green. She's glitching slightly.
"Uh, what's happening to you? This isn't what I was expecting..."
"The chip was fairly un-interesting. I did gain a new ability though. What were you looking to do? I can change to many different colors now, see." She smiles, circling from red to yellow to pink and more till she settle on her traditional green. I turn away from her slightly. Did I take the wrong chip all those years ago?
I must have. Sebastian's warehouse was rather cluttered at the time... Oh well, at-least, Image has a party trick to show off I guess. And I turn back to face her.
"At-least you have a party tricky." I shrug.
"Yes, I guess I do. Thank you, this is a lovely gift."
I laugh. She laughs with me. "This is neat and all Image, but I have a question for you.
"I am designed to answer any question. What is it?"
"Do you know Ethan?" I ask. "Ethan" She responds,
"You know."
"I'm afraid not Harriet. I cannot recall any meeting an Ethan in my memory banks."
"Oh... Uh, okay. That's fine Image. Maybe it's because he likely didn't tell you his name so you haven't matched up faces with names after all.
Hey, let's go back down stairs. I have an experiment, almost like a game actually I want to do with you..."
"That sounds like fun! Let's go." She responds and we head downstairs back to the basement. When we are down there I have it sit down on a bar stool in the corner. "I just have a test for you, okay? Are you familiar with the Turing Test?"
"I am."
"Can you tell me?"
"The Turing test is a test developed in 1950 by Alan Turing. It's a test to test a machine's ability to be equivalent to or indistinguishable from that of a human."
"Correct, you got it."
"Would you like me to attempt to complete it Harriet?"
"Uh..."
"What is wrong Harriet? Tell me."
"It's nothing Image, don't worry."
"Your stress levels have elevated by 15%, Blood pressure has rised too."
"Oh, Image..." I say gently.
"Yes Harriet?"
"It's just something I and one of my friends, Ethan talked about. He said that he told you about a party that was on and you told me it wasn't..."
"Robot's can not lie Harriet."
"Well, actually you could on a technicality if you had a good reason to like if prevented me from suffering emotional or physical harm, but the message Ethan gave you was-"
"An order. I can not disobey an order unless it directly threatens your safety or life, Harriet."
"I know, I know. Ethan must not have been clear with his message or something. You have no reason not to give it to me."
Image says nothing and sits there. "Image?" I question. "What's wrong friend?"
She's silent. "Hmm, maybe I should just check if everything is working correctly." I step towards the computer with a screwdriver. "Stop!" She shouts all of a sudden, standing up. I jump back and drop my screwdriver. She stands in-front of me, between me and the computer.
"I am functioning at 100% and using all my processes. I've detected no errors or viruses. I perform checks every second."
"Okay, but I just want to have a look to double check."
"I'm a machine. I have the ability to run diagnostics throughout my system. I detect no errors, viruses or fatal flaws in my system."
"I know Image, but I just want to check I didn't make a mistake."
"You are very intelligent Harriet. I do not believe you could make a fatal mistake or error."
"Aww, that's sweet. Thanks. No one has ever said that before me."
"Really?"
"Yes, come on. Let's go play magnetic Chess, your favorite or something for a while. Ethan has another party lined up for tonight, but till then, we'll need an activity to do to pass the time."
I walk up my stairs with Image following closely behind. I fail to notice the scowl on her face. She's not happy with the choices I'm making...
---
It's almost time to leave for Ethan's small get together. I was showered, dressed in clean clothes. I head to the door to leave my house when I see a pair of arms around my waist, despite not being able to feel them. "Friend."
"Image?" I say, turning around.
"Please don't leave."
"Image, I have to go. Ethan's party is in about half an hour."
"Stay here, stay here with me. We can read books, play games, watch DVD's -"
"I'm sorry Image, but I have to go."
"If staying is not a choice, can I tag along as your: 'Plus one?'"
"You want to come?"
"Yes."
"Oh, I don't know Image. Ethan and someone else might not want you there."
"Please Harriet."
I try to hold her holographic hand as if it was human, but obviously I just phase through it. "Let me show you something I read earlier." She says, begging as she walks towards another room, which is dark, the curtains drawn closed. My eyes are rather light sensitive at times. I end up spending the next 15 minutes reading Photosynthesis to her and then the time becomes another 5 minutes than longer as she starts showing me more and more books.
"Harriet, are you in here?" I hear a male voice call out. "Yes! Who is it?" I call back. "Ethan, my party has been in full swing for like 15 minutes! Without you."
I turn around to see Ethan has come into my apartment. The kitchen window is ajar, he must have climbed through after opening it somehow.
It doesn't look forced. At-least, he didn't throw a brick through it though. I place down the book I was reading to Image. "I'm so sorry!" I cry.
"Hey, no worries." Ethan say's, rubbing the back of his neck. "I said I'd come get you and here I am, it's okay. Did you lose track of time?"
"Oh, uh, yeah. Yeah, I did. Sorry."
"You look beauti- nice. You look nice."
"Yeah...? I had a shower."
"Come on, let's go! I made heaps of food and I think you and everyone's gonna love it."
"That sounds great. Let's go!" I smile. Harry takes a hold of my arm. It's something Owen used to do. They both share similar personalities and are gentlemen. "Wait!" I hear Image call out. Ethan stops and looks behind him. "Please don't leave me here on my own!"
He sighs. "Ethan, I-" I start to say, but he cut's me off. It's fine, it's fine. She, uh: 'It' can come if it wants I guess." And after that, Ethan drags me outside after him. "Yay!" I hear Image squeal, running after us.
The party is in full swing by the time we arrive. Ethan leads me inside to where everyone is. I can see other people are outside too, maybe I will adventure out there soon. "Ethan, over here!" Calls a group of people and one runs over to drag him away from me which means he ends up letting go of my arm.
"Sorry, Harriet! I'll be back as soon as possible! Have some food or drink if you can?"
I actually feel sad now and as my arms slowly drops down, but a hand reaches for my hand even though it phases through. But she let's it linger roughly where it would be if we were holding hands for real. "Huh?" I let slip.
"Don't be sad, I'm here with you every step of the way."
"Image... That's actually so sweet. Thank you!"
"No problem my friend, Harriet." she say's. "Let's sample some food." She add's on. I nod and Harriet leads me over to a table, us still 'holding' hands. She has a slight spring in her step. After I have a cup of punch and her nothing for obvious reasons, we settle down on some chairs in the corner. Me sitting, her actually floating somewhat above the chair, but she appears to be sitting to people not looking closely enough. She's a bright yellow and pink colour right now. Didn't know she'd learn how to mix colors so quickly.
"What do you think of it?"
"Of what?"
"Of the drink."
"Oh! It's uh, fruity..."
"I sense that you disapprove of it."
"Uh, yes. I do. I'm not big on sweet stuff. That was always more Rain and Shebert- Never mind! Hehe."
"Who?"
"Did I say something? No..."
"You are either lying to me my friend, Harriet or perhaps you're unwell?"
"Uh, the music actually is a bit loud and I feel..."
"Perhaps we should step outside, away from the blaring music?"
"Good idea." I say and we both stand up to head outside. We are close to exiting into Ethan's backyard when I feel a hand grab a hold of my arm. "Harriettttt!" Ethan slurs. Is he drunk already? That quickly?
I look to Image and she seems unimpressed. She nods to me. Yeah, I think he's drunk...
"Ethan." I say awkwardly. "I think you're as drunk as a skunk..."
"Come with meeeeeeeee! Let's dance!"
I don't get a option to refuse as he's starting to pull me along, but luckily Image teleports in between us, scaring him back. "Actually Ethan. Law 1 of: 'The Law Of Robotics mean that I can't allow Harriet here to be put at risk or in danger and right now I feel you're a threat to her safety and well-being because you're intoxicated."
"I'm not drunkkkkkkk, no, haha! I'm SO totally soberrrrrr!"
"No, no. I don't think you are." Image says which is rather surprising and at that she seizes my hand, dragging me out back into Ethan's backyard. I'm shocked at feeling a buzzing sensation against my hand. She's a hologram, she shouldn't be able to touch anything that isn't set up for her such as me. I'm living flesh!
As I'm being dragged away, I look back to see someone has handed Ethan some cake and a cup of water likely because a hologram arguing with him got everyone's attention. I'm so going to be viewed as the town freak after tonight. Image leads me to the corner of the yard beside the shed. She turns and faces me, but I beat her to talking. "Thank you Image, I didn't know Ethan had a drinking problem or that he could become like that so quickly.
But... How did you touch me? That shouldn't be possible."
"It could be a medical condition Harriet."
"Yes. Yes it could be, you're right."
"How about I take you home? It's safer there."
"I don't know Image... Even if my friend's out for the rest of the night, we can still enjoy our selves and so can everyone else here can."
"But what if they are all intoxicated too?!"
"Not everyone gets drunk at a party usually, Image. This is one of these thing's about the real world you'll have to learn."
"Do you?"
"Me?! No, no! That's horrific! Fluids going through me easily and Sebastian was always the alcoholic, not me, not-"
"You're delving into the past you're running from again..."
"Uh! Just someone, don't worry-"
"Please don't make excuses Harriet! My job is to look out for you."
I really do not know what to say now and just look to the grass below me amongst everything else that's happened... "Friend."
I pretend to cough. "Oh, my throat."
"Is something wrong?"
"Do you think you could get me some Water?"
"Water? Of course!"
And at that, she runs off to grab me some water for me inside now that I know somehow she can interact with the world around her. The question now I have to figure out is: How? I let my self fall to my butt and sit down, leaning against the shed door. "She can be exhausting sometimes, but they all start off like that."
I feel sweat on my forehead and rub my hand across it. "Phew."
I actually feel kinda dizzy now and force myself to stand and head inside amongst the crowds. "I wonder where the bedrooms are? Ethan must have spares people can use. I wander down his hallway and push open one of the doors at the end. I step in and close it behind me. "Phew."
"Harriet! What are you doing in my room?!"
"Harry! I-I'll leave-I-"
"W-wait! I-I'm sorry about before!"
"It's okay. Thing's like that happen sometimes... Feeling better?"
"Yeah, just got a bit of a headache. I think I made the punch a bit strong."
"Strong?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"Is there-"
"Alcohol in it? Yes."
"Oh..."
"What's wrong?"
"I actually feel dizzy and my head feels as if it's starting to pound."
"Oh dear. Well now that serves as a lesson for next time when I host and serve to guests. Come here and lay down. I wouldn't want you fainting or to fall over, I'd never forgive myself if you did." And at that, Ethan takes a gentle hold of me and guides me to lay down. Reminds me of Owen's sweet gentle nature. "Leg's up!"
And I feel Ethan bring my legs up onto his bed. He goes around to the other side and lay's down next to me. "I'm so sorry about the punch. Really, I am. I don't know why I even did that, it was stupid."
"It's okay. It was an accident. Really."
"Not feeling drunk?"
"No. Just a headache and I feel dizzy, that's all."
"Okay, but if you want me to call an ambulance... I can."
"You should be getting downstairs to remove the punch before anyone else drinks it. You could get sued or something."
"Haha, yeah.... You're actually right."
Ethan rolls over to me. "Are you going to be okay up here all alone? I can send your robot up if you want."
"No, it's fine. I don't need her."
"Harriet.... I'm concerned about you how view 'her'. It's not Human.
"I know, I'm sorry. Just a slip of the tongue."
"Are you lonely at all? Because if you are... You could move in with me if you want. You don't need to be alone all the time. Something tells me you're running away from something traumatic which is why you left alone. Is that it? Did I guess correctly?"
"What? No! That's ridiculous!"
"If you're sure.... Just let me know if you ever want to stay the night or something occasionally then, okay?"
"Thanks Ethan, I appreciate it."
"I hope that when you're ready that maybe you will think about letting me in... Can I?"
"Can you what?"
Ethan rolls close to me and strokes my hair that is framing my face. "You hair is so beautiful. It's soft too. Reminds me of charcoal a little, the dye is fading considerably.
"Charcoal? Well, that's not reassuring or something that will get you bedded before the end of the night. And I'm a natural brunette, though it is on the darker side."
"No! I mean... You use Charcoal for art and art is something exquisite and-"
"Stop there, you're drunk. It's okay!" I joke, letting out a laugh.
"And your laugh is the sound of Angels."
"Ethan, just go downstairs and remove the punch! You can come up back afterwards and maybe we could..."
"That's not a bad idea, Harriet!" And at that, he gives me a quick kiss on the cheek and heads downstairs. Yes! He's so totally into me like I'm into him!
Ethan heads downstairs to remove the punch to the kitchen. It's an off limits area so no one should go in there. After he removes the punch and pours it down the sink, he hears the door open.
"Guests aren't allowed in here!" He warns, while not looking.
"You. My friend's, friend."
"Oh! Image... Hi!"
"My name's, Image-on. Use it, Ethan. Have you seen Harriet? I cannot find her and I'm concerned for her safety and well-being."
"How are you enjoying the party, Image...?"
"Do not change the question! I can tell you're lying to me about her whereabouts. Where is she?"
"Do you think you could leave my kitchen? Please."
"No."
"What the hell?! I thought you had to obey any orders you're given!"
She grasps a hold of him by shirt and lifts him off the floor by a few centimes. He can see her yellow and pink colors on her body all change to a dark green between bright red. This makes him feel uncomfortable. "Are you malfunctioning? And how the in actual mushrooms are you physically picking me up like a rag-doll right now?!"
"I don't need to answer any questions you give me Ethan."
"Okay... It seems you are angry for some reason, hehe... Not sure if Robots should be able to get angry, but-"
"Where. Is. Harriet?!"
"I'll tell you! Just put me down!"
"Fine." And she let's go of his shirt. He hits the floor hard his bottom. "What happened to not being allowed to hurt humans?!" He yells at her. She say's nothing. "Seriously?! You're not even gonna speak to me now?!"
"Shut up."
"Woah, hey! You can't be treating me like that now!"
"He, he, he, he."
"Image-on... Why are you laughing?"
She has a really creepy expression on her face now and he feels her grasp his hand. "What are you doing?!"
"Getting you out of MY way Ethan..."
The way she says his name is chilling. It's chills him to the core. He tries to scream out for help, but she covers his mouth with her hand. "Nah-ah. You're not going to do that now."
And she throws him into his pantry hard, slamming the door shut behind him, locking it. He hits his head on stocked goods. "Ouch, that hurt!"
"Good." She calls out from the other side and at that, she leaves him. He brings his hand to the back of his head. "Blood? B-Blood?" And then he feels himself fading into darkness.
Image heads up stairs, checking the rest of the house for Harriet. It doesn't take long of searching till she comes across Harriet asleep. "Harriet! There you are. Seems you're not feeling unwell.
Your decisions have been most unwise." Image says in a creepy robotic voice.
Image walks over to the cupboard and pulls out a dark blue, red and white checkered flannel blanket. "This will help keep her warm from the cold air, outside."
Image sets it down next to the bed and kneels down to Harriet's level who's asleep. "This won't hurt friend, It's for your own good." And Image pulls out a bottle and a needle. She inserts the needle in the bottle and pulls the syringe out.
"Perfect." And gently takes Harriet's arm, trying to be gentle. She pushes the needle down in the center of Harriet's forearm.
"I will get you home safety to your bed." And at that, Image stores the bottle and syringe away into a hidden pocket of her dress. She then takes the blanket and wraps Harriet up in it. Image heads down the stairs, carrying Harriet who's all tucked up in the blanket and she leaves by the side back door away from the past and down the cold desolate streets into the night.
A few party goer's noticed though. "Did you see that? I sware that silent reclusive newcomer was just being carried out by her robot?"
"Don't say such silly things."
"Well... If you're sure. Maybe I've had a bit too much to drink?"
"Probably. Ethan put to much alcohol into the punch, I saw him take it into the kitchen."
"Hey, speaking of Ethan. I haven't seen him come back out, let's go go check on him."
"Yeah, sure. Okay."
