I sit in one of the seats at the top of the stadium, the farthest from the field as I could get.
Wrapping my jacket closer around me, I start scanning the field, searching through the players who were warming up on the sidelines.
I pause when I see him.
He jumps back and forth on the balls of his feet, trying to keep warm. Another player runs over to him and starts gesturing with his hands as he talks to Isaac.
Isaac stops moving and leads the other player to a man who looks like he was the coach. The player and Isaac talk with the coach for a couple minutes, before Isaac leaves the two and walks around the other players, encouraging them.
I notice how relaxed Isaac seemed as he talks with the other players and as he warms up.
This is the place he loved to be. I could tell.
Suddenly, one of the players who had been scanning the crowd, turns sharply and starts to run towards Isaac. Isaac gave him his full attention as the player talks then turns toward the crowd and points to a person. Isaac starts scanning the crowd, trying to find the person his teammate was pointing to.
I can barely breathe and wished the ground could swallow and hide me as Isaac's eyes scans over the stands. There is no way he could tell that it's me, I encourage myself. This stadium is huge.
Isaac suddenly freezes as he notices someone a few rows left to me. He turns back to his teammates and starts clapping. The other players on his team immediately stop what they were doing and start to form a circle around Isaac, all clapping and jumping up and down. They start chanting something together then spread out in a line, facing the crowd. The crowd jumps up on their feet, mirroring the players and chanting along with them.
I was in shock. I have no idea why Isaac loves soccer so much, but he did tell me that his teammates were like family to him. I took a deep breath.
This is what he was meant to do. This is what he lives for.
Minutes later, the games starts. I could not watch the game. I was too focused on watching Isaac. He was so confident. He continually hyped up and encouraged his teammates. No wonder he was the captain. Everyone responded to him with so much respect.
With the score at 1 to 1 and only three minutes left on the clock, the crowd was going ballistic. The student section was the loudest of all, doing their own chants to cheer on their fellow classmates.
Isaac along with his teammates, runs down the field with a confident control of the ball. They pass the ball among each other and around the opposing players. Within, what it felt like, only seconds, a player gave a powerful kick to the ball. Isaac jumps up and uses his head to knock it into the corner of the goal, slipping through the goalie's hands.
The spectators's cheer was deafening as the players surround Isaac, congratulating him on the lead.
Isaac's team ran the clock till they secured their victory.
I exit the stadium and walk outside, as the crowd only got louder to celebrate.
I walk around to the back entrance and sit on a bench, waiting for the teams to exit.
I took deep breaths to slow my racing heart and to prepare for what I am about to do.
After two hours but what felt like eternity, the doors open as the opposing team exit and head toward their bus. They glance at me briefly, but are too upset over their loss to pay me much attention
Almost there. I breathe deeply again.
Finally, the other team opens the door and walk out into the crisp air. Isaac leads the group, laughing and joking with the other players, balancing a gym bag over his shoulder. One of the other players stop laughing as soon as he notices me sitting there.
"Hot stuff alert. Best behavior, gentlemen." The player stand taller in a fake "gentleman" like manner as the other players turn toward me.
Isaac laughs without looking at me. "Jacob, I told you if you do that one more time, I'll tell coach to work you double." Isaac shoves Jacob playfully in the shoulders.
Jacob stops laughing and stares at me. "Careful, Captain, Hot-Stuff is looking at you."
Isaac turns around and immediately loses his smile as he recognizes who I am. I stand up slowly, unsure of what to do.
"Danielle?" he whispers.
Jacob gasps in playful shock. "Hot-stuff is your girlfriend?! I wish I had a girlfriend."
Isaac doesn't take his eyes off of me as his fellow teammate tried to decipher who I was.
"Hold up, I know you from somewhere." One of the other players steps closer, trying to see me better in the light. "Wait! Your Danielle Elen! The director, right? You were recently on the news for that block buster! My family loves that movie."
I smile slightly to show him he is correct.
Jacob gasps again. "Your girlfriend is hot and a director of that movie! Some guys get everything."
Isaac whips around to face Jacob. "Shut up, will you?!" he yells at Jacob's face.
Jacob takes a step back and holds his hands up in a surrender motion. "Calm down. Is she your girlfriend or not?"
Isaac takes a deep breath. "She's not."
"Then she's mine!" Jacob makes a motion to walk towards me. One of the other players holds out a hand to block him.
"You two look like you need to talk. We'll give you some space." The other player grabs Jacob around the shoulders and starts leading him toward the parking lot. Another player walks up to Isaac and takes his bag from him then leads the other players away from us.
Within moments, Isaac and I were left facing each other alone.
"The game was impressive." I pull my sleeves down over my hands.
"Why are you here?" Isaac asks softly, like the peace keeper he always was.
I breathe out through my mouth. "I don't know what to say." I will myself not to cry.
"Well, you could start by apologizing. For pushing me away. For running."
"I'm sorry, Isaac. I really am." The tears came. I quickly wipe them away.
"Who are you running from?" he takes a step closer to me.
"You. I was running from you."
"Why?"
"I couldn't do it. Every one expected us to marry, but what if everyone's expectations of us made us believe that we loved each other. I didn't want to hold you back anymore."
"How do you know you were holding me back?" he asks calmly, looking straight at me.
I press my lips together, not knowing how to answer.
"Maybe you weren't holding me back. Maybe I really do love you, beyond what people think."
The tears came back, but this time I let them fall. "I know I shouldn't have left. But it hurt too much to stay. I should have told you, but I hate having to say goodbye, you know that."
"I know it would've hurt too much to stay. Girl, you've been through hell and back, but I could helped you! I could have been that strong shoulder to lean on!"
The tears became uncontrollable. He is right. I shouldn't have left without telling him. But staying there, after losing my entire family, it just hurt too much.
"I'm sorry," I say again.
He sighs. "You're here now, though."
I nod. "Just tell me what what to do. I want to make it right. I'm coming back. I can't live my life without you, but it's just so hard to live without my family."
Isaac closes the gap between us in two long strides. He reaches out and holds my face with his hand, tracing my jaw line with his pinkie.
"I know what you should do."
I look up into his deep brown eyes.
"Just say it. It's only three words." He gently caresses my cheek with his thumb.
I breathe deeply, knowing what he was asking for.
"Remember that time, when we would compete to see who was the fastest runner." He brings nostalgia at full force.
I smile, reminiscing. "We would compete in everything."
He mirrors my smile with his familiar teasing smirk. "Or when we would smack talk about who was going to be famous one day. You were all like, 'I bet I could beat you.'" He sighs. "From what was on the news, looks like you did."
"From how that crowd was reacting today when you came out onto the field, I would argue otherwise."
He laughs then we both go quiet as he rests his forehead against mine. The absolute silence of the night makes me want to freeze this moment it time.
"Just say it, Donut." he uses his nickname for me.
"Tom," I return. "I love you."
"There you go," he laughs again, then leans forward to kiss me.
"Thank you for coming after me." I whisper.
"Thank you for getting on the news so I knew where to find you."
He kisses me again.
"I love you, too, Donut."
