I have always been afraid of missing things.

Buses. Deadlines. Opportunities.

Maybe that’s why I reach everywhere early.

College, interviews, family functions. I like to stand quietly in a corner and observe before stepping in.

That morning, I was at the railway station.

Foggy winter air. The platform smelled of chai and iron tracks. I was traveling to another city for a job training program in agriculture research. My parents stood beside me, giving the same instructions for the tenth time.

“Call when you reach.”

“Don’t skip meals.”

“Keep your documents safe.”

I nodded like a good daughter.

Inside, I was nervous.

New city. New people. Shared accommodation. Unknown colleagues.

The train arrived with a loud metallic sigh.

When it was time to board, my father lifted my suitcase himself, even though I told him I could manage. He always pretended I was still small.

As the train started moving, I saw him walking alongside for a few seconds… then slowly stopping.

I swallowed my tears.

Inside the compartment, I found my seat.

Lower berth.

Across from me sat an elderly couple and beside the window sat a boy around my age.

He was reading a book.

Not scrolling on his phone. Not sleeping.

Reading.

I noticed the title for a second, but quickly looked away before he could catch me staring.

Silence felt safer.

Hours passed.

The elderly uncle started a conversation with me—where I was going, what I studied. I answered politely.

When they got off at the next major station, only the two of us were left in that section.

Suddenly, it felt too quiet.

I pretended to sleep.

After some time, I heard him say softly,

“You can open the window a little if you want fresh air.”

I opened my eyes.

He wasn’t looking at me directly. Just speaking casually.

I nodded and adjusted it.

That was our first sentence.

Evening came.

The train was delayed.

We both got down at a station to buy tea.

The vendor handed two cups but I struggled to hold my luggage and tea together.

Before I could drop something, he took my suitcase without asking.

“I’ll hold it. Drink your tea first.”

I froze for a second.

People don’t usually help without a reason.

But his tone was normal. Not overfriendly.

Just… considerate.

We stood there quietly sipping tea.

After a while he asked,

“First time traveling alone?”

I nodded.

“Same,” he said.

That surprised me.

He didn’t look nervous at all.

Maybe everyone hides it differently.

Back in the train, the lights dimmed.

The rhythmic sound of tracks made everything feel slower.

We started talking.

Small things at first.

College majors. Cities. Weather.

I told him I studied Botany.

His eyes lit up.

“I work in agricultural equipment design,” he said.

That made us talk more.

Plants. Soil health. Farmers. Rural projects.

For the first time, I forgot to be cautious.

Words came naturally.

At some point, he said,

“You speak very thoughtfully.”

I immediately became self-conscious.

Was that good or bad?

He noticed my silence.

“I mean it as a compliment,” he added quickly.

I nodded, looking down.

Night grew deeper.

At around midnight, the train suddenly stopped in the middle of nowhere due to technical issues.

Announcements were unclear.

Passengers were irritated.

Some complained loudly.

I felt anxious.

What if we reached too late?

What if I got lost in the new city?

Maybe my face showed it.

He said gently,

“It’s okay. We’ll reach. Trains don’t disappear.”

I almost laughed.

Such a simple sentence.

But it calmed me.

We didn’t realize when it became 2 a.m.

He asked,

“Are you scared of new beginnings?”

The question caught me off guard.

“Yes,” I admitted honestly.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know who I’ll become.”

He thought for a moment.

“Maybe that’s the exciting part.”

I didn’t answer.

But his words stayed.

Morning arrived.

Sunlight entered through the window.

The announcement finally declared our destination.

My heart started racing.

Reality was close now.

We gathered our luggage.

The train slowed.

People rushed toward the exit.

In that chaos, I almost lost balance.

He held my elbow briefly to steady me.

Not tightly. Not dramatically.

Just enough.

We stepped onto the platform.

New city. New noise. New air.

For a second, we just stood there.

Then he said,

“I guess this is where we separate.”

Something inside me felt… strange.

Not heartbreak.

Not attachment.

Just the awareness that some people enter your life like passing stations.

Brief.

Meaningful.

Temporary.

He took out a small notebook page and wrote something.

“It’s just my email. In case you ever need help regarding agricultural tech projects.”

Practical. Safe. Respectful.

I took it.

I wanted to say something important.

Something memorable.

But all I managed was,

“Thank you… for the tea.”

He smiled.

“Don’t miss your new beginning.”

And then he walked away into the crowd.

No dramatic background music.

No looking back.

Just… gone.

Months passed.

Training was difficult at first.

I doubted myself many times.

But whenever I felt scared, I remembered that sentence:

Trains don’t disappear.

I never emailed him.

The paper stayed inside my diary.

One day, while cleaning my drawer, I found it again.

For a moment, I wondered—

What if I had missed that train?

What if we had never shared that compartment?

What if I had stayed silent the entire journey?

Life is strange.

Some people are not meant to stay.

They are meant to remind you who you are when you’re too afraid to step forward.

Sometimes, I think maybe it was just a dream.

Because I never saw him again.

But whenever I hear a train at night,

my heart remembers the sound of that journey.
