Ancient Egypt left behind a lot of stories and unanswered questions. How did they make pyramids so skillfully? What is the truth behind the Sphinx and the Book of the Dead? There are so many parts of this ancient culture that can quirk the interest of people. From Osiris to Seth and from Ra to the King of Sun, Ramses II.
Let's have a nice chat about these infamous myths that we all know, in one form or another.
I would love to learn more about Egyptian mythology. All my knowledge on this subject comes from the Mummy movies I was obsessed with growing up. :) Can't wait to read what you guys talk about!
I have to say, that's where my curiosity came from too! There was this cartoon based on the mummy of Tutankhamen coming back to life in a museum. It opened my eyes one day and I started to read like crazy.
I think one interesting thing about gods in ancient Egypt is that, much like in Ancient Greece, they have flaws and they've been human before! I love how Isis, Osiris and Seth are actually siblings yet Osiris had to marry Isis to keep the blood pure. This is one of my favorite stories. Seth grew to hate Osiris because he was loved by the people so he locked him in a chest. Isis loved him so much and went after him. She found parts of his body and by magic, completed him. The thing is, they had another sister, called Nephthys. She married Seth. But, just like the trend of those times, Osiris had a baby with Isis called Amentis AND a child with Nephthys, called Horus. He preferred Horus and visited him often under his spirit form.Horus took revenge for his father and went into the Underworld, after Seth.
My love for Ancient Egypt came from the Horrible Histories book series (I can thank those books for creating my love of history in general). It's been awhile since I read any mythology from Egypt so I'm a bit rusty in that department.
@MousyCh, Ouke no Monshou-manga
Parts of yugioh especially later on as the characters are supposedly descendants of ancient Egyptians. I can probably find more just give me a few.
@MousyCh, I was obsessed with yugioh. Especially how Seto was supposed to be the reincarnation of Seth. Manga was better in my opinion on the mythology side
@roseofnoonvale, so it is manga not an anime? I looked on my anime sites and couldn't find the title. Total bummer! I'll see if i can find the manga! :)
Why did you mention Ramses II (the Great) as mythology? Except perhaps for him loving to advertise the greatness of his reign; what is mythological about a man who was quite real and lived into his 90's fathering well over a hundred children and marrying a few daughters?
This isn't at all mythology related but did everyone hear about the infrared scans of Tutankhamun's tomb?? They *might* have found a chamber that *might* contain Nefertiti's mummy and burial goods... (sorry but I am so so so so excited by this!!!!!)
It is seriously in doubt of Nefertiti's actual date of death considering what happened after Akhenaten died. Smenkhkare or Neferneferuaten ruled after and there was a regency during the end of his reign. As exciting as it would be to find Nefertiti; she most likely ruled Egypt AFTER her husband died before Tut and her daughter took the throne and had to restore the old religion. Do you SERIOUSLY think the priests of Amon (Karnak) were going to let a woman let a lone the woman who helped bring about THEIR downfall and prestige "live on in the after life"? According to Ancient Egyptian religion; Amenhotop IV (Akhenaten) will NEVER EVER have entered the afterlife. Look at the state of his "mummy"...it isn't a mummy...it is a pile of bones. Women rarely took power in Egypt; yes, Hatshepsut was a rarity. As well as Cleopatra VII (last pharaoh of independent Egypt). The few other "rarities"; Tausret, Ahmose-Nefertari (regent though), Nefertiti is also considered a pharoah. Ashotep (again another regent),Sobeknefru as a co-ruler at the end of her father's reign...but statues of her are headless; because she dared to take a man's role? Hmm. Ankhnesmeryre II; another regent mom. Nimaethap mom of Djoser who built the step pyramid in Saqqara (another regent). I mention these important women who held incredible power but the costs were high; if a woman actually held the title of Pharaoh? She was ERASED from history and her body destroyed for doing what was against the nature of the gods. Sorry to pee on the happy parade. If they do find Nefertiti; I would be the first one to drop my jaw, roll in my tongue, and scream; OMFG. Look at what history has done to Cleopatra...the vile seductress of Julius Caesar and Marc Antony...woe to the Romans of a well educated woman! OOOOOO scary
Also WHAT stories of Ramses II and his sons are you referring? The bible?!?
The Egyptian Book of the Dead was their spell book to navigate the afterlife. Any one of you know the Papyrus of Ani?

I find this story very impressive.
