I'm Canadian but I always find it annoying as well when people say the British monarchy does nothing since it is simply untrue. I don't care much for celebrities (it's nothing personal) but I was actually kinda excited for the wedding and enjoyed reading the updates about it and seeing the photos and videos of it.
I like the point you made about Brits having a physical link to their history; I never thought of it that way before. I'd also have to agree that the royals are a big part of England's identity and image. It's hard to disregard the monarchy when looking at England.
@Nicole Armas, I don't blame them to be fair - I'd rather have a monarchy or Trudeau a million times over rather than Trump!
Yeah, I didn't know exactly how the crown is funded until the other night when I decided to actually research it and find out. All it took was a quick skim of a few Wiki pages and it was all there. I guess its just much easier to agree with something somebody posts on facebook instead of actually going and reading it about it yourself.
@Sarah Louise, No need to apologize haha, I understand the rant. I've also heard Americans say they wish that they had a Prime Minister like Canada does.
Really? I didn't know that. It certainly is madness, people don't bother looking further into things and just accept whatever is presented without doing further research.
Exactly, we'd not have much going for us if it weren't for the royals. Sure, Buckingham Palace would still pull in the tourists, but for sure the main attraction there is that the queen still lives there. If we look at Versailles in Paris, it's not the top thing to see if you're in the city, just something to see if you're interested in the history of the French monarchy. That's what Buckingham would become sooner or later without the queen there - something for the history fans, not something that the more general tourist is willing to go out of their way for because the monarchy isn't there anymore. So many times when I was in America speaking to Americans they told me how much they wish they had a monarchy like ours, and yet over here so many people are just wanting to throw it away.
Plus I found out last night that the money the royals get from the sovereign grant is 15% of what the crown estates put directly into the treasury. So even though the grant is funded by the tax payer (roughly 65p per year per person), really all we're doing is giving them back 15% of what their estates have earned - that's not even half!! It's madness - everyone believes everything they read on the internet without doing any research whatsoever. (Sorry for the long rant ahaha, I clearly feel very strongly about the monarchy haha)
