I agree that it was nice timing to break the tone with comedic relief. It also allows us some insight into a side of Zara's character we haven't seen yet- what she's like when she's at ease. She's been thrown from incredibly high stress situations to more high stress situations. It's nice to see her relax enough to tell a joke.

I do wonder if that roll of thunder is foreshadowing, and speaking of wondering, why isn't she wondering why this soldier is being so kind? She's been suspicious of many others until this point.
