漢以前稱兄長為「晜」，「ㄎㄨㄣ」這個音在古代泛指大物。像蟲之大曰「昆」，魚之大曰「鯤」。山之大曰「崑」，火之大曰「焜」。玉之大曰「琨」，地之大曰「坤」。統治者也被稱為「昆敦」，之所以後來「晜」被「兄」取代大概是因為同音字太多的結果。

「兄」字早在詩經就有出現了，不過我不確定晜字是甚麼時候出現的。

@斟墨客 。 迷,「晜」是俗字，正字當為「昆」。《詩經、國風、王風》裡〈葛藟〉一詩有云「終遠兄弟、謂他人昆」。而「兄／雄」這個字跟「洪、宏、紘、弘」同源，古音相同。都是指「大」的意思，所以大兒子曰「兄」。引申為兄長之義，而「哥／歌」這個字也跟「河」有關。也有「大」的意思，所以聲音大曰「哥」。引申為歌詠之義，之所以「哥」取代「兄」大概也是因為「兄」的同音字太多的緣故。
