I think what I meant when I was brain dead writing this is that Alice could've stood her ground to battle the soldier, but Luke (being the selfless and self-destructive traumatized boy he is) jumps in instead, fighting the soldier.
'It started with the blast.' is a good sentence. i just had an English lesson so that's why this is in my head but that's a key sentence - shows a shift in tone. usually prevalent in texts without a cyclical structure. BOOM REVISION AND READING
