跟它的讀音關係密切。「白」在古代是「別」字的通假字。什麼叫通假字呢？

一般來說，同音字或近音字相互通用或假借，稱為通假字。通假字三種情況：同音通假、雙音通假、疊韻通假。

「別」和「白」兩個字的聲母相同，屬於雙聲通假字。因此，人們就將「白」字與「字」通用，再後來， 「白」字也就代表「別」字比變成錯別字的總稱了。
