It occurred to me because it was ironic, I guess. In Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," Ebenezer Scrooge is an old, miserly grouch who oppresses his clerk, Bob Cratchit, who also happens to be his nephew. In the original story, it is Bob Cratchit who has a son (Tim) who walks with crutches.
In this short scene their situation is kind of reversed. Hence, "Ebenezer." :)
