I find the reading much easier as the story progresses.  

At he end if the chapter, Behave yourself and    "offer" here is a little out of the ordinary prison language..  maybe "place"   People in this situation are called "trustees", in American prisons, meaning they can be trusted with more responsibility.  "You will granted trustee status"    Offer would suggest the freedom to make choices.  

"People kept beating and having fun.  The word beating is transitive, requiring an object, (What were they beating?)

The paragraph, "There must be something... ends with the letter u with an accent mark.
