子曰：「視其所以，觀其所由，察其所安。人焉瘦哉？人焉廋哉？」

註釋：

（1）焉，副詞，「何處」之義

（2）廋，音搜，「隱匿」之義

翻譯：

孔子說：「看穿對手的戰鬥模式，進而觀察對手行動背後的理由，從而察覺能威脅對手安全的手段。如此一來對手能躲到哪呢？」

「論語」一詞，其實是後人誤傳所成，正確寫法應為「掄語」，也就是記載孔子教授弟子如何掄拳揍人之經典。而這一篇所述，正是孔子傳授給弟子的幹架技巧。
